Call it a cheap shot, call it a dirty hit, what it was, was an intent to injure. Alexander Ovechkin purposely hit his fellow countryman Sergei Gonchar knee to knee with intent to take Gonchar out of the game. Ovechkin history of a short temper is world renowned and Gonchar scoring a goal minutes earlier in the game to tie it up got his temper going.
This is a player that will do whatever it takes to win, a Sean Avery if you will. If the NHL doesn’t step in now it will become open season next game, there would be absolutely no reason a Penguin would not do the same to a Capital player.
While you are at it, count me in with the thousands of Detroit fans upset over the job done by the NHL referee’s Tim Peel & Brad Watson the same referee’s that disgraced hockey in the Detroit / Anaheim game 3 days ago were responsible for tonight’s debacle. With these two out there it is a matter of time until some of the NHL’s most talented players are injured and no one will be watching once again.
