Pittsburgh Penguins Free Agency Round Up – 2009

  • Pittsburgh defenseman Philippe Boucher has announced his retirement from the NHL after playing 16 seasons.
  • Ak Bars Kazan of the KHL has signed WBS Penguin Janne Pesonen.  Pesonen set the record for points scored in a season for the WBS Penguins last season.
  • Pittsburgh signed 25 year old WBS Penguins goaltender John Curry to a 2 year contract
  • Pittsburgh signed 32 year old Washington goaltender Brent Johnson to a one year deal .525 million.
  • Pittsburgh signed 25 year old defenseman Ben Lovejoy to a one year 2 way deal.  Lovejoy played 2 games for the Penguins last year.
  • Pittsburgh signed 24 year old center Tim Wallace to a two year two way deal. Wallace played 16 games for the Penguins last year.
  • WBS Penguins signed 21 year old center Zack Sill to a minor league contract
  • Pittsburgh signed 31 year old 6ft 4in defenseman Jay Mckee from St.Louis to a 1 year .8 million dollar deal.  St. Louis bought out his contract and will pay him 2/3 of his 4 million dollar buyout over 2 years.
  • Edmonton signed 27 yr old Chris Minard to a two way contract.  Minard set the record for goals scored in a season with the WBS Penguins last season.
  • Florida signed 28 yr old Jeff Taffe to a 2 year two way contract
  • Pittsburgh signed 29 yr old defenseman Chris Lee from the Islanders farm system
  • Pittsburgh signed forward Chris Conner from Dallas to a one year 2 way contract
  • Pittsburgh signed Ruslan Fedetenko to a 1 year 1.8M contract
  • Pittsburgh signed 6ft 3in 210pd 26 yr old defenseman Nate Guenin from the Flyers to a 2 way contract, he will get paid .5 million if he plays for the Pittsburgh and .1 million if he plays for WBS.  Guenin is a Sewickley, PA native.
  • Los Angeles signed Rob Scuderi to a 4 year 13.6 million dollar contract
  • Pittsburgh signed their 3rd round 2006 pick – 6ft 1in – 200 pd defenseman Brian Strait to a 3 year entry level contract.  Strait captained the US National under-18 team to a gold medal and won the national championship with the Boston Terriers this season
  • Columbus signed Penguin backup goaltender Mathieu Garon for 2.4M for 2 years
  • Pittsburgh signed forward Michael Rupp from New Jersey, 2 years 1.65M dollar deal
  • Montreal signed Penguin defenseman Hal Gill for 4.5M for 2 years.

  • Ottawa has signed 29 year old ex-Penguin goalkeeper Andy Chiodo to a one year two way contract.
  • Traktor Chelyabinsk of the KHL has signed 29 year old exPenguin Ramzi Abid away from Rapperswil-Jona of the Swiss league.  Abid last played for Nashville in 2007
  • SKA St. Petersburg of the KHL has signed 39 year old exPenguin Sergei Zubov to a 2 year deal
  • Toronto aquired exPenguin Wayne Primeau and a second round draft pick from Calgary for defenseman Anton Stralman and forward Colin Stuart.
  • Minnesota has signed ex WBS Penguin Kyle Brodziak away from edmonton.  Brodziak will be reunited with his WBS Penguin coach Todd Richards.
  • Atlanta has come to terms with RFA exPenguin Colby Armstrong who had filed for salary arbitration. Armstrong signed a 2 year 2.4 million dollar deal
  • Carolina signed exPenguin winger Tom Kostopoulos away from Montreal to a 3yr 2.75 million dollar contract
  • Atlanta signed exPenguin defenseman Noah Welch away from Tampa Bay
  • Boston signed exPenguin backup goalie Dany Sabourin away from Edmonton
  • Boston signed exPenguin 29year old Rico Fata away from Ottawa
  • Calgary signed ex WBS Penguin/Nailer Jason Jaffray away from Vancouver
  • Ottawa signed exPenguin, 36 year old Alexei Kovalev away from Montreal to a two year $10 million dollar deal
  • Vancouver signed exPenguin Mikael Samuelsson away from Detroit to a 3 year deal.  Details are not available yet.  Samulelsson was a player the Penguins received when we traded Kovalev to the Rangers.
  • Boston resigned 41 year old exPenguin Mark Recchi to a one year 1 million dollar contract.  Recchi finished the season with 23 goals and 61 total points last season.  Recchi said he will retire after this season.
  • Atlanta resigned exPenguin Chris Thorburn contract details are not available yet.  The Penguins traded Thornburn to Atlanta 6/22/07 for a 3rd round pick (Robert Bortuzzo)
  • Colorado signed former 2000 5th round Penguin pick David Koci for .575M for one year.
  • St. Louis signed 33 year old exPenguin Ty Conklin to a 2 year 2.6 Million dollar deal
  • Chicago signed 30 year old exPenguin Marian Hossa to a 12 year 62.4 Million dollar deal 5.2 Million a year (he is signed until he is 42 years old).  Hossa is signed for 7.5 million the first 5 years, then the contract goes way down just to keep the salary cap figure low at 5.2 mil a year.
  • Anaheim signed exPenguin Erik Christensen to a one year deal, the amount has not been announced
