Penguins Lose to Stanley Cup Rival Red Wings

This is another one of those games, as fans, we really look forward to.  A rematch with the team that the Pens have faced in the last two Stanley Cup Finals.  One would think that the players would also get up for a game like this…..maybe, not so much.

I have just a couple of thoughts after watching tonights loss:

  1. Though, I thought Fleury made a bunch of really good saves, the wrist shot from 40 feet he let go by was a backbreaker.
  2. Watching the Pens get out-muscled by the likes of Johan Franzen and Tomas Holstrom all night was quite discouraging.
  3. I have questioned the Penguins strategy of having the defensemen back in and allowing opposing attackers to easily gain the blue line before, but I think it bears repeating.  Would it kill them to challenge the other team at the blue line once in a while?
  4. Was Ponikarovsky wearing roller skates tonight?  He seemed to have trouble staying on his feet this evening.

Hopefully the Pens can step it up Wednesday against the dreaded Capitals.

  1. Like the Great MT, DISCO DAN is dressing players and selecting line combos by pulling them out of a hat.

  2. If they (the defense) plays like last night against the Capitals— the Capitals could put up double-digit goals.

  3. Classic summary of last night’s game: First intermission John Stevens selects the Stanley Cup Champions to repeat. Post game Stevens says………. I’m not so sure!

I couldn’t have summed up last night’s game any better. Our Flightless Birdies are looking more flightless each game.

    1. IMHO the combinations of Goligoski, Letang, Gonchar and Leopold just aren’t cutting it. These are four offensive defensemen that aren’t supplying very much offense.
Shero and Blysma need a sitdown. Either McKee has to be in that lineup or they need to talk about assets in Wilkes/Barre. I doubt whether Bortuzzo or Strait are ready but I would much rather see Lovejoy or Engelland although they were both minus 3’s in their last game. This is not good watching them the forwards skate right into the zone pretty much untouched.
Goligoski’s stock is slipping big time.

      1. I would love to see Ben up herehe led the AHL in +- and did not look out of place in the few games played, Gonchar hasn’t looked same since that piece of crap Alex kneed him last year
