Why Wasn’t Ovechkin Suspended?

I’m sorry I’m late on this, I’ve been out of town for a week or so. I started writing the “GameDay Poop” today in between shoveling about 3 foot of snow off my roof. I was trying to catch up on what was going on around the NHL when I kept reading about this goal that the Capitals got against the Canadiens that was not counted and quite possibly broke their game winning streak. After finally watching the video I was amazed that Ovechkin left his feet and did a flying elbow into former Penguins Hal Gill and decked him, no penalty called.

I thought surely even though the refs clearly missed a charging penalty and an elbow, Colin Campbell the NHL leading authority on suspensions would have something to say about the matter. Nothing. All I could find was a bunch of Whiny Capital fans complaining that the bad call caused their game winning streak to end. Now this I do not have a problem with as the transient Washington fan has about as much hockey knowledge as a Taco Bell combo platter.   To prove this I bet right now, if they can read this, they are shaking their head in amazement at just finding out that there are elbow penalties called that are not elbows to the head.

I have a problem with the NHL  not looking into this. If you ever wondered why they fight in the NHL, the reason is because the NHL cannot regulate itself. Ovechkin now has that “history” of being a cheap shot artist.  That non “history” that Colin Campbell used as the reason for not suspending Ovechkin the first 10 times he cheap shot someone is no longer applicable. Ovechkin has even been suspended this year for such actions. Once again star status allows a no call, and the NHL players will be forced to police the game themselves.

Most likely the cheap shot Gill received was for the job he did stunting Ovechkin’s offensive abilities in the playoffs last year which eventually sent Ovechkin home to St. Petersburg to cry alone in his hotel room when he found out the Penguins won the cup. That being said the NHL may want to start policing Ovechkin for his own good. Ovechkin now deserves a target on the back the same way Eric Lindros received one because of his cheap shots. I give Ovechkin 2 years before he can no longer play because a player like Darius Kasparaitis will step up and take him out permanently. Deservingly so.

If you missed it, here is the cheap shot:

  1. Damn Krundle, you must have nads the size of watermelons to call out CAPS fans for whining when this is one of the whiniest blogs I’ve ever read… Fact is, the refs haven’t called the leaving the feet charging penalty in so long I’m amazed you even brought it up… If you had more than a Taco Bell grasp of the game, you would have realized that fact… It’s also amazing that if the hit on Gill was such a cheapshot, why didn’t he get up and do something about it?… He only has like 30 lbs. on Ovechkin… Nor any of of his teammates for that matter… Fact is, Gill got decimated by a big time hit while trying to find the puck at his feet… Neither Gill or Price ended up in the net, but the puck did, and the goal should have counted… As for Gill stunting Ovechkin’s offensive abilities during last season’s playoffs, you must be delusional, or think only Pens fans read this blog and will allow your revisionist BS to stand… When the CAPS were eliminated in game seven, he was tied with Crosby for the most playoff points in the NHL to that point… How was that stunting Ovechkin’s offensive abilities? LOL!!
As for other players taking retribution – LMAO!! Dream on… Fans of other teams rail against Ovechkin’s big hits, but most players respect his game… That’s why the players keep voting him as the leagues MVP… He’s tough and he plays hard, and a douche like Kasparaitis would be wise to avoid Ovehckin, for he could easily be the one down and out for the count…
And for the record, I don’t consider that goal being waved off the reason the CAPS streak ended… They didn’t play well for most of that game, especially defensively, and that’s why the streak ended… That still doesn’t mean the refs made the right call on the ice…

  2. I have a feeling that the first round of the playoffs the Caps will easily be eliminiated when someone making a name for himself takes out Ovechkin. There won’t be many tears around the league, ovechkin is pretty much a 2 year old on skates.

  3. Yeah, this is a new one for the NHL a goon that can score. What goes around comes around… and I can’t wait to see it.
