We will keep updating this until 5PM today with news of Penguins trades and trades of ex-Penguins.
Was it luck or did Ray Shero see this coming and create the Perfect Storm?
Here we go again, It’s trade season and the trade rumors are swirling all around the Pittsburgh Penguins. This year could be a doozy. The Penguins GM Ray Shero has amassed $8 million in available Salary Cap space. With the Salary Cap being substantially lowered next year, teams won’t be afraid to be parting with the big named players that they know they can’t sign next year anyway. At the same time Shero has amassed a boat load of available promising trade chip young defensemen. Coincidence? Chance Happening? Maybe, maybe not!

Here We Go:
—————- April 3rd, 2013
Penguins:
Not a Rumor: Pittsburgh got Jussi Jokinen from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for a conditional draft pick. Read: “Penguins Trade For Jussi Jokinen Add Depth to Already Deep Roster”
Dave Molinari – Pittsburgh Post-Gazette – “The NHL trade deadline is at 3 p.m. today and, if precedent holds, Penguins general manager Ray Shero will continue looking into possible additions to his roster pretty much until time runs out. Although Shero is believed to be open at least to the idea of bolstering his fourth line, the acquisitions of Iginla, Morrow and Murray last week went a long way toward transforming today from Deadline Day to plain old Wednesday…”
Ex Penguins:
1:01PM – Pierre LeBrun – @Real_ESPNLeBrun – Flyers claim Adam Hall on waivers from Tampa
Adam Hall played 17 playoff games during the Penguins 2008 Stanley Cup run. This is the third player on the Flyers from that run (Talbot & Fedotenko). It looks like the Flyers are building for the playoffs without a playoff spot.
*11:15AM – Arthur Staple – @StapeNewsday – Twitter – “Source says #Isles are trying to land Hawks rookie Brandon Saad. Cost is high, clearly, but Snow is interested.”
*Thought we would mention since Saad is a Pittsburgh kid. And we are bored.
10:50AM – Seth Rorabaugh – Post-Gazette – ?@emptynetters – “All you need to know about this trade deadline is that they’re breaking down how to pop a water bottle off the net on TSN.”
9:06AM – Bob McKenzie – @TSNBobMcKenzie – Twitter – “DAL not shopping D Alex Goligoski but some teams are inquiring…”
8:45AM – Renaud Lavoie – ?@RenLavoieRDS – Twitter – “With Maxime Talbot out for the season, Ruslan Fedotenko could stay with the Flyers. Still a name to watch today. ”
—————- April 2nd, 2013
Rob Rossi – TribLIVE – “Ray Shero thinks he is done dealing. That does not mean he will not make a move before the NHL trade deadlines expires at 3 p.m. Wednesday. He said Sunday, “We’ve made the moves we’re going to make, I think.”
1:20PM – ExPenguin Jaromir Jagr was traded to the Boston Bruins.
Pierre LeBrun – ?@Real_ESPNLeBrun – “Told the Dallas Stars have decided to trade Jaromir Jagr. My sense is Boston leads the list of front-runners”
Greg Wyshynski – Puck Daddy – “If the Penguins pick up Jagr, they’re going to have to slowly skate out to the nWo theme before every game because this is getting ridiculous. But no, they’re not. At least we don’t think they are.”
Krundle’s Thought’s – Great googaleemoogalee, Why does this sound so familiar??? Boston is the frontrunner, Penguins not in the mix??? I know I’ve heard this before but I can’t put my finger on it.
—————- April 1st, 2013
Renaud Lavoie – @RenLavoieRDS – Twitter – “Jarome Iginla hopes to sign an extension with the Penguin. If that is not possible, the Kings are a strong option.”
Rob Rossi – TribLIVE – “Shero said he does not expect to make another trade before Wednesday’s NHL deadline. “How do you replace Sid, honestly?” Shero said. ”
Krundle’s Thought’s – After saying that Shero was probably thinking to himself “I’ll leave Trade Deadline Day to the amateurs”
—————- March 30th, 2013
Krundle’s Thought’s – The last time I saw it this quiet on the trade rumor front the Penguins traded for Marian Hossa. Believe it or not Ray Shero still has a lot of money to spend if he so chooses. It is rumored to be around 4 mil. Paul Martin is out for 6 weeks and Kris Letang has a re-occuring injury. Might Shero look for another rental defenseman?
—————- March 28th, 2013
NOT A RUMOR: – NHL.COM – “the Calgary Flames announced that they’ve traded franchise icon Jarome Iginla to the Penguins for Pittsburgh’s first-round pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, the rights to unsigned draft choice Kenneth Agostino and unsigned draft choice Ben Hanowski.”
Phil Krundle – PenguinPoop.com – “Penguins GM Ray Shero Steals Jarome Iginla While Boston Sleeps” – In the biggest craziest trade shock I can remember, Ray Shero just re-united the tandem that led the Canadian Hockey team to the gold medal in Vancouver 2010. Yes, Ray Shero pulled the rug out from under Boston and landed the 2013 trade deadlines biggest prize. At around midnight NHL.com and TSN had reported Jarome Iginla was traded to the Boston Bruins. Then ESPN, USA Today & everyone else was reporting it… Read More
—————- March 27th, 2013
Nick Cotsonika – Yahoo Sports! – “Steve Sullivan, Phoenix Coyotes: He’s a skilled, experienced veteran. He can add offense, especially on the power play. His contract is up. Coyotes GM Don Maloney has been following the Penguins, with whom Sullivan played last season. What if Sullivan played on the left wing with Evgeni Malkin while Morrow played on the third line with Brandon Sutter? Or what if Sullivan was just a depth guy and power play specialist?”
Not a Rumor: Pittsburgh Penguins – “The Pittsburgh Penguins have re-assigned defenseman Robert Bortuzzo to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League on a conditioning assignment, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.” Also Kris Letang has been placed on IR and Simon Despres is now back with the Penguins.
Krundles Thoughts: This “loophole” 13.8 provides an open roster spot for Evgeni Malkin to return and keep the seven defensemen on the roster that coach Bylma wants. read “Penguins Playing Musical Chairs with Defensemen“
Greg Wyshynski – Puck Daddy – It’s thought he would only approve a trade to a team that would give him a long-term extension. His alleged “list” of preferred destinations include the Pittsburgh Penguins, Boston Bruins, Los Angeles Kings, Chicago Blackhawks, Anaheim Ducks and Vancouver Canucks. But the Pittsburgh Penguins landed Stars forward Brenden Morrow, ostensibly because they’re out on Iggy.
TSN Report: Letang has a broken foot.
—————- March 26th, 2013
Randy Sportak – Calgary Sun – “For those who want to know what teams had scouts in attendance at the Flames games, here’s the list: the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, the San Jose Sharks, the Detroit Red Wings, the Vancouver Canucks, the Winnipeg Jets, the Edmonton Oilers, the Ottawa Senators, the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Florida Panthers, the New York Islanders, the New Jersey Devils, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Philadelphia Flyers. Read into it what you wish.”
Mark Spector – SportsNet.ca – “A Pittsburgh source suspects that GM Ray Shero may not be willing to part with the prospects required to land Iginla, but will stay in the auction to drive price up for Boston.”
Not a Rumor: Simon Despres has been sent down to the WBS Penguins to make room for Kris Letang returning from the IR tonight.
Pierre LeBrun – ESPN.com – “It was certainly assumed by many that the acquisition of winger Brenden Morrow would rule the Pittsburgh Penguins out of the Jarome Iginla bidding. Not so, a source told ESPN.com Monday. Even with Monday’s acquisition of blue-liner Douglas Murray, the Penguins still have the cap room to stay in the mix on Iginla, and plan to do so… You certainly get the sense Pittsburgh views this as an all-in year, given the play of its team plus the fact the salary cap is high this year. It’s a chance to go for it”
Shelly Anderson – Pittsburgh Post-Gazette – “Shero didn’t tip his hand as to whether he might have other deals in the works — the Penguins have more than $6 million in salary cap space — but he indicated that he’s not planning on trading any of the defensemen.”The guys that are here right now are the guys, in my opinion, who are going to be here April 3 when you can expand the rosters,” Shero said, adding that if the club has to move some bodies around before April 3, it will be “procedural.””
Joey Wales – PenguinPoop.com – “I hate the Yankees. They and their talent acquisition model represent everything wrong with America today. I hate the concept of buying talent with no regard for team chemistry in order to try to get whatever trophy awaits you and your overpayed superteam. If the Penguins rent Jarome Iginla and end up going the distance, it will turn that sweet sip from Lord Stanley’s cup more than a little vinegary….”
Bob McKenzie – TSN.ca – “When you look at what Boston is trying to do, they lost out on Brenden Morrow, and they do not want to lose out on Iginla. They want and need him perhaps more than Los Angeles, Chicago or Pittsburgh. The price is going to be high for Iginla. He is a rental, a pure rental and right now the Calgary Flames are looking for three
elements: a first round pick, a primary prospect and a secondary prospect.”
—————- March 25th, 2013
@LouisJean_TVA – Montreal TVA Sports – Twitter – 6PM today – Source confirms the @Penguins are “still in” on the Jarome Iginla sweepstakes. #NHL
Harrison Mooney – Puck Daddy – Iginla – “Finally, when it was assumed that the Penguins’ two recent moves took them out of the running, Ren Lavoie fired back, saying that wasn’t the case.”
Krundles Thoughts – The Penguins have a quality regular defenseman available along with a quality role player. The Penguins also have a draft pick and a quality prospect available. Why Not. Is it cheating to have all of the good players?
Elliotte Friedman – CBC Sports – “What do the Flames want? A: They want good young players, whether at the NHL level or prospects. They are also looking for high draft picks. It is not an insignificant price. Reports out of Pittsburgh indicated the Penguins considered it too rich for them. … Remember this about the Penguins, they’re still $7 million under the cap. Is Phoenix Coyotes general manager Don Maloney following them around because he has something Pittsburgh wants?”
Chris Johnston – Sportsnet – “There is nothing to suggest the Penguins are done making moves yet, either. Shero was certainly non-committal about his future plans when contacted by sportsnet.ca on Monday, which suggest he’s willing to at least entertain the idea of another trade. Make no mistake about it: The Penguins are taking another hard run at a championship.”
Not a Rumor: The Penguins have just traded a 2013 2nd round draft pick and a conditional 2014 2nd round draft pick to the San Jose Sharks for stay at home defenseman Douglas Murray. The conditions of the 2014 2nd round pick is if Murray doesn’t sign for next year it becomes a third round pick.
Krundle’s Thoughts – My quick thoughts are that the Penguins right now have too many roster players and need to make another move. Disco Stu at PenguinPoop here thinks the Penguins are going to send a defenseman to Edmonton for a Center. Penguins have put Kris Letang on 7 day IR to make room for Murray. Penguins can temporarily send down Despres and Bennett to make room for Malkin and/or Letang. After April 3rd the roster is unlimited.
Dejan Kovacevic – TribLIVE – “That leaves a defenseman as the next priority. I can tell you the Penguins are not optimistic about landing a top-4, if only because those guys flat-out aren’t available right now. But top-6 is different, and the team has realistic hopes set on a big, rangy, physical guy. Want a name? Phoenix’s Rostislav Klesla isn’t exactly punishing, but he’s 6-3, left-handed, kills penalties, blocks shots and is 31 with another year on his contract. Coincidence or not, Don Maloney, the Coyotes’ GM, has taken in these past two games at Consol.”
Krundle’s Thoughts – There is absolutely no use getting another average defenseman. Shero should concentrate on an actual trade for this, not a rental or fill in. Pick up a top-4 defenseman that can shoot or clear the net or don’t bother. The Penguins need to make a roster move if & when Malkin return’s. Dejan also hints the Penguins may not be done with Dallas. Whitney? Jagr?
—————- March 24th, 2013
Jim Matheson – Edmonton Journal – “Boston, L.A., and Chicago would be the only suitors for Iginla. He had four teams on his list of places he’d go to waive his no-move clause and Pittsburgh, one of them, just traded for Brenden Morrow, so they’re out. I think it’ll be the Kings, where Darryl Sutter stands behind the bench, but that’s just an educated guess.”
Adam Gretz – Twitter – @AGretz – Coyotes GM Don Maloney listed on attendance sheet in Pittsburgh tonight. Second time in a week he’s been here.
Not a rumor: “Pittsburgh Penguins and Dallas Stars Trade Two Morrows and Picks” – “The Penguins have traded promising defensive prospect and 2011 first round draft pick Joe Morrow to the Dallas Stars in return for veteran captain of the Stars Brenden Morrow. The trade reads as this: Pittsburgh gets Brenden Morrow and Dallas’ 3rd-round pick in 2013 for prospect Joe Morrow and Penguins 5th-round pick 2013.”
Aaron Ward – Twitter – Brendan Morrow waives his NTC to go to Pitt #TSN
@RenLavoieRDS Brendan Morrow is meeting with Stard GM Joe Nieuwendyk. Should know after if he’ll accept a trade to Pittsburgh.
@JoshYohe_Trib: If Brenden Morrow comes to Pittsburgh, he’s playing on Malkin line. No question. Still nothing confirmed yet.
@RobRossi_Trib: Brenden Morrow has yet to waive no movement clause, or so I’m told. Still trying to confirm a lot of details. #pens
@DarrenDreger: I believe Joe Morrow would go to Dallas as part of the deal for Brendan Morrow.
@DarrenDreger: Source say the Pens and Stars have a trade in place for Brendan Morrow. However, he has yet to waive no trade clause.
Renaud Lavoie – RDS.ca – Translated French – “Jarome Iginla file will grow in the coming days and according to the latest information, the Flames captain has submitted a list of teams he would agree to be traded. The Bruins, Penguins, Kings and Blackhawks are courses listed by Iginla. Flames obviously do not want to let go for a song and Iginla them seeking an established player in return and a draft pick of the first round.”
Bucky Gleason – Buffalo News – “Calgary is dreaming if it thinks it can get a top-four defense prospect, a first-round pick and another player from Pittsburgh for Jarome Iginla. The Penguins will turn their attention to Brenden Morrow with the idea he can play with Evgeni Malkin. Pittsburgh also is looking a defenseman who can help the PP. Jordan Leopold?”
Shelly Anderson – Pittsburgh Post-Gazette – “That led to a checklist of needs, not discussed by Shero but assembled by vocal fans and critics. That list included: A physical, sound defenseman. The thinking was that there was too much traffic around their net and the team was yielding too many scoring chances…. A left winger for Malkin…. An elite winger for Crosby…. A depth forward or two….”
Dave Molinari – Pittsburgh Post-Gazette – “A shutdown defenseman and a winger with something of a scoring touch — though not necessarily one who would assume a top-six role — appear to be the Penguins’ primary targets. Both make sense for a team capable of going on an extended playoff run after losing to lower-seeded opponents in each of the past three springs.”
—————- March 23rd, 2013
Bruce Garrioch – Ottawa Sun – “Given Iginla’s status, he should be allowed to choose his destination, where he wants to try to win a Stanley Cup. The Boston Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins will both show interest, but the betting money is he joins old buddy Darryl Sutter with the Kings.” – “Jaromir Jagr, You have to wonder if the Penguins would bring him back for one last run with Sidney Crosby. The relationship wasn’t the best when Jagr left, but he admits he’s grown up a lot and they’d be a nice fit because he can still contribute.”
Darren Dreger – TSN Insider – Twitter – “Iginla trade spec grows by the day. Source says Pit,Bos,Chi,LA on his list with ongoing discussions. CGY will not comment, confirm, or deny.”
Rick Buker – PenguinPoop.com – “Penguins Update: Time to Trade Malkin?” – “Case closed, right? Well, not quite. Malkin, it seems, is having increasing difficulty playing 1A to Crosby’s 1. Long gone are the days of the “Two-Headed Monster,” when the duo blended together as seamlessly as peas and carrots in a fresh pot of Irish stew. The two supernovas often appear to be out of sync when sharing the same patch of ice.”
Krundles Thoughts –I’m not seeing or have I heard of any difficulties between the two. Malkin doesn’t like doing interviews, Crosby takes all that off his hands. The best two players in the world on the same team. Might never happen again. play it as long as you can.
—————- March 22nd, 2013
Phil Krundle – PenguinPoop.com – ” …While I really hope this is not the case with Malkin, having the insurance policy of a Jerome Iginla or another quality rental couldn’t hurt.” – “The cost of this rental must be low. Simon Despres must not be in the equation. Despres is a very important bargaining chip in the contract talks with Letang this summer. Despres can and will fill Letang’s shoes if said talks go awry. The Penguins have more than a few quality upcoming defensive prospects not named Despres in the minors and one them on the team right now…”
Mark Spector – SportsNet.ca – “Think about it: How difficult is it to take on significant salary in a year when the cap is due to fall nearly $6 million to $64.3 million next season? Couple that with the fact that, after the trade deadline, there are about 10 regular season games left for most teams. That’s not much time for, say, the Pittsburgh Penguins to work an Iginla into the lineup.”
Dan Rosen – NHL.com – “If the Flames make Iginla available, it’s possible he’d consider waiving his no-movement clause to go to Pittsburgh. If GM Ray Shero wants to pull the trigger on that type of deal, Iginla could come in and play right wing alongside Evgeni Malkin and James Neal. That would push skilled rookie Beau Bennett down the lineup and in effect bolster the Penguins’ offensive ability in their bottom-six as well. Shero, though, could be in the market for a top-four defenseman. The problem is those kind of players aren’t so easy to find.”
Rob Rossi – Twitter – @RobRossi_Trib – “#pens will look to bolster defense before deadline, but top 4 name player not in cards. Move more likely similar to Gill in ’08.” – “@JoshuaCooper Thanks to @RobRossi_Trib For having me on his show this morning. Talking a little Hal Gill, Pens scouts watching Nashville, and Kris Benson”
Aaron Portzline – Columbus Dispatch – Twitter – (Columbus vs Calgary game) – “So many scouts, should have a campfire. Calgary, Ottawa, Phila (2), Pittsburgh, Vancouver, Chicago (2), San Jose, Toronto, Tampa Bay here.”
—————- March 21st, 2013
John Boruk – CSN Philly – “Flyers should put Andrej Meszaros on the trade block” – “The Ottawa Senators took a major hit after losing Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson for the remainder of the season. The Senators are certainly familiar with Meszaros. However, if I were Holmgren, I wouldn’t even rule out the rival Rangers and Penguins, who will also be desperate to add defense. The price tag would just be a little steeper.”
—————- March 20th, 2013
Adrian Dater – Denver Post – “One Eastern Conference team is scouting tonight’s Avs-Stars game and it is… The Pittsburgh Penguins. Who could they want on these teams? Could it be Jaromir Jagr? I say, why not? If you’re looking for a winger who can put the puck in the net and be good on a line with, say, a Malkin, you need only look at Jagr. I don’t have any solid info. saying that is who they’re looking at. But it’s my opinion that they should be if they need deadline help.”
Mike Heika – Dallas Morning News – (Q & A on what the Stars Should be looking for in a trade) “I think they have to target kids and draft picks. There are big dogs out there like Jay Bouwmeester, but you will have to give up big assets and take on big money for those players. I’m not sure that’s something the Stars want to do. I believe Pittsburgh has eight defensemen among their top prospects, and I think that’s how you need to look at this.”
Bob Mitchell – The Star.com – “The Calgary captain has moved to the top of the list. Flames GM Jay Feaster absolutely needs to trade him to start the rebuilding process. Any deal has to include a first-round pick and a top prospect. Iginla appears ready to move but he has a say in where he’ll go and Pittsburgh and Los Angeles are expected to make pitches.”
Joe Haggerty – Comcast Sportsnet – “Above and beyond that, Iginla will need to be 100 percent on board with coming to Boston, and this is where the Bruins will be competing with the Penguins, Kings, Canucks and Red Wings among others for his services.”
—————- March 19th, 2013
Adam Gretz – CBS Sports – “The Blue Jackets, for what it’s worth, have regularly had multiple people, including new general manager Jarmo Kekalainen and team president John Davidson, attending games in Pittsburgh over the past several weeks, which only adds to speculation like that (Chicago, Minnesota, and Detroit have also been regulars in Pittsburgh recently).”
Bob McKenzie – TSN.ca – “There is certainly a chance that Iginla will be traded before the deadline. There is talk out there that maybe Iginla has given the Calgary Flames a list of teams he’d accept a trade to. Teams we’re hearing that may be on the list are Pittsburgh, Boston, and Vancouver. Then somebody else would say, ‘No, that list is actually five or six teams. You have to make sure you include the Vancouver Canucks, Los Angeles Kings, and Detroit Red Wings.'”
Pierre Lebrun – ESPN.go.com – “Bob McKenzie reported Tuesday night during our Insider Trading segment on TSN in Canada that he believes the ball is now rolling on the Iginla trade discussion front, at least in terms of the team and the player communicating the possibility of moving him. Boston, Pittsburgh, L.A. and Detroit, to me, are the teams that make the most sense and are clubs I know that have interest in Iginla”
—————- March 18th, 2013
Mike Colligan – HockeyWriters – “The reason Niskanen might make sense as part of a trade for Chris Stewart is his departure wouldn’t leave a gaping hole in the roster. Pittsburgh has an impressive stockpile of defensemen working their way through the system.”
Rob Rossi & Josh Yohe – Trib Live – “Phoenix general manager Don Maloney watched the game from the media level at Consol Energy Center. The Penguins and Coyotes were trading partners recently when Phoenix reacquired defenseman Zbynek Michalek on the first day of the NHL Entry Draft. The Penguins are seeking to bolster their defense and upgrade the third and fourth lines before the trade deadline April 3″
—————- March 17th, 2013
Aaron Portzline – Columbus Dispatch – “Davidson (President of Columbus hockey operations) went to Pittsburgh yesterday morning to catch the Penguins’ rout of the New York Rangers, then returned to Columbus in time to watch the Blue Jackets beat Phoenix.” “players most talked about: R.J. Umberger, Derick Brassard, Vinny Prospal & Adrian Aucoin.
Eklund – Hockeybuzz – “Ryan Clowe – Told today that a deal is there to be made and that there are three teams…two of which are deep rivals in Montreal and Toronto…working on the third team..could be Pittsburgh…” & “In the I have to report it because I heard it, but I can’t imagine these teams dealing with one another department I am hearing the Penguins have interest in re-acquiring Max Talbot…I know for fact the Pens hated losing him as a UFA…but still…the Flyers helping out the Penguins?”
Dave Molinari – Pittsburgh Post-Gazette – “On the Penguins: 17 shopping days remain” – Molinari looks at the top prospective rental players – Calgary RW Jarome Iginla, Washington C Mike Ribeiro, Buffalo D Robyn Regehr, Edmonton D Ryan Whitney, Buffalo D Jordan Leopold, Calgary D Anton Babchuk, Edmonton D Ladislav Smid, Edmonton D Mark Fistric, Colorado RW Milan Hejduk
Krundles Thoughts – I have joined the growing group that believes a winger for the top two lines is probably not needed. The Penguins have scored more than any other team. A big defenseman is where Shero needs to focus. A defenseman that has a slapshot wouldn’t hurt either.
Kevin Allen – USA Today – “After years of faithful service to Calgary, Iginla deserves the Ray Bourque treatment. Send him to a city where he could win a Stanley Cup, such as Pittsburgh or Boston or Los Angeles.”
—————- March 16th, 2013
Bruce Garrioch – Ottawa Sun – “LW Ryane Clowe, C Michael Handzus and D Douglas Murray — are available and sources say Wilson (GM Sharks) “is in full panic mode.” Murray is being “shopped hard” but one team backed off because of concerns about his conditioning. League executives believe Wilson is frustrated but he often stirs up discussions then doesn’t deal. The Habs, Bruins and Penguins have interest in Clowe …”
Krundles Thoughts – If you are a glutton for punishment there is also more Pittsburgh/Iginla stuff in the above article.
—————- March 15th, 2013
Rob Rossi – Twitter – @RobRossi_Trib – “Iggy price: top 4 D prospect, roster player, and draft pick. For now, anyway. He has no movement clause” – “starting to hear #pens not as interested as dangling Despres as they were earlier in season. Also, price for Iginla way high.” – “Told #pens have wanted a D partner for Letang since summer, and that want remains.” – “finally, #pens unwilling to move Joe Morrow. View him as top overall prospect.”
Sean Gentille – Sporting News – “The Tribune-Review’s reported asking price, high as it may sound for a rental player on the decline, makes a lot of sense for the Penguins.” … “That said, a ‘roster player’ could mean a lot of things—Tyler Kennedy and Dustin Jeffrey are obvious choices and at least capable of eating minutes on a second- or third line, but it’s tough to imagine the Penguins taking other pieces away from their current lineup. Also, there’s the issue of the draft pick.”
Doug Harrison – CBCSports – “It was Calgary Flames captain Jarome Iginla, who could be reunited with Crosby come the April 3 National Hockey League trade deadline. First off, no one knows if the veteran right-winger is willing to waive the no-movement clause in his soon-to-be-expired contract. Perhaps Flames general manager Jay Feaster doesn’t wish to move Iginla. Or maybe Pittsburgh GM Ray Shero wouldn’t be willing to pay the expected steep price for a 35-year-old with 523 NHL goals.”
Krundles Thoughts – Trading away Simon Despres for a rental Iginla would be the worst trade of Ray Shero’s time with the Penguins. Also, defensive prospects Morrow and Pouliot should be protected.
—————- March 14th, 2013
Rob Rossi – Trib Live – “As a manager, all you can do is keep touch with teams, continue to monitor your own team and see what needs may be,” Shero said. The Penguins would like to bolster their depth on defense and at forward, preferably with a top-four defenseman that specializes in own-zone play and a winger that could add scoring to the third or fourth lines… Adding players who can contribute on the penalty kill is a priority. The club is interested in Calgary captain Jarome Iginla, a right winger and impending free agent. But he might not fill a top-six role with the Penguins, and Iginla has a no-movement clause in his Flames contract.”
Pierre Lebrun – ESPN.go.com – “Keep an eye on the Los Angeles Kings if and when the Calgary Flames and Jarome Iginla decide to begin divorce proceedings. While it’s been widely (and accurately) reported that Boston and Pittsburgh have interest in the Flames captain should he become available, I believe the Kings would be right there in the mix as well and could be willing to dangle young backup netminder Jonathan Bernier.”
—————- March 12th, 2013
Vicki Hall – Calgary Herald – “For what it’s worth, Pittsburgh Penguins scout Don Waddell watched several games in Calgary over the last few weeks and then flew to California to catch the team on a three-game dive in the sunshine.”
Krundles Thoughts – Any chance the Pens are looking at recently benched “defenceman with a mean streak” Cory Sarich? He has spent time on the Penalty Kill and the Pens biggest shortcoming right now is clearing the people in front of Fleury.
—————- March 11th, 2013
Jeff Gordon – St. Louis Post-Dispatch – “Jack Johnson, D, Columbus: Kekalainen downplayed Johnson-to-the-Penguins speculation, but such a move could make sense for both teams. Puck-rushing defensemen are a hot commodity and the Blue Jackets could trade from a position of strength to acquire some long-term assets. Also, Columbus wouldn’t mind shedding the last four years and $20 million on his contract.”
SportsdayDFW – “According to Twitter reports from The Fourth Period’s Dennis Bernstein and the (Dallas) Morning News’s Mike Heika, Boston has been one of the six teams that have attended the Stars’ last two games, along with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Columbus, Minnesota and the New York Rangers.”
Krundles Thoughts – I’m not positive but I think the game they were talking about was a Dallas vs. Calgary game. Could be more Iginla stuff.
—————- March 10th, 2013
Eric Francis – Calgary Sun – “There’s little chance Iginla has forgotten how exciting it can be to play alongside such mega-stars as Nash or Sidney Crosby, who have both been his linemates in Olympics hockey. Given how woeful things are in Calgary these days, it’s got to be awfully tempting to put Pittsburgh, Boston and Chicago on his wish-list of trade destinations, as all three boast front-running teams who would happily open their wallets to have Iginla in the fold this spring and beyond.”
Jim Matheson – Edmonton Journal – “Iginla is 35, Perry is 27. There’s a big difference in compensation. The Flames captain has a no-trade clause in his contract and has never wanted to play anywhere else, but if Calgary is out of the playoffs, I’m betting Jay Feaster will come to him and says, “Here’s three teams that want you. Take your pick.” He’d be a nice rental for the Boston Bruins or Pittsburgh Penguins.”
Eklund – Hockeybuzz – “When you think of adding a player to put you over the top has there EVER been a better example then Jarome Iginla?… I feel Iginla has enough interest already between Boston, Detroit and Pittsburgh (I keep hearing how Pittsburgh may be where he wants to go) that the return on Iginla should be pretty damn good.”
Krundles Thoughts: Iginla, Iginla, Iginla. We went through the whole Iginla / Pittsburgh bit a couple of years back just to have him say he doesn’t want to leave Calgary. What makes this year any different? I’m not holding my breath.
—————- March 9th, 2013
Bruce Garrioch – – Ottawa Sun – “If GM Bob Murray is to deal (Corey)Perry at the deadline, he wants a king’s ransom. The asking price is a No. 1 pick, two top prospects and a player who can help the Ducks right now. Translation: Doubtful Perry goes anywhere and the Ducks will try to convince him to stay. If he moves, he’ll come East. The Senators, Bruins, Penguins and Leafs will all show interest. None are expected to pay that price …”
—————- March 8th, 2013
Chris Stevenson – Ottawa Sun – “Another possibility is Pittsburgh Penguins defenceman Kris Letang. He’s got one year left on his contract after this season and is due for a big raise from his current deal, which carries a cap hit of $3.5 million. With centre Evgeni Malkin also coming up as a potential UFA after next season, is Penguins general manager Ray Shero going to be able to keep everybody happy? If or when the Penguins might contemplate moving a guy like Letang, the price tag is expected to be a top six winger, an everyday defenceman and a prospect”
John Toperzer – HockeyBuzz.com – “Simon Despres continues to see inconsistent time in the lineup. The thinking is that Despres sits against more physical opponents and plays when the team can use his skating ability. I don’t have as big of a problem with the move as do others – I’m just glad the Pens didn’t trade him to Minnesota for Devin Setoguchi…”

Mike Colligan – The Hockey Writers – “Dupuis and Kunitz are putting together impressive campaigns. They’re also both 33. If there was an interest in finding Crosby a long-term winger two years ago, isn’t it safe to assume that desire quietly still exists today? The quick fix would be Calgary’s Jarome Iginla. There’s nothing long-term about the 35-year-old Iginla, but he’s scored over 30 goals in every season since 2000. He’ll fight, crash the net, notch a hat trick, and organize a million-dollar charity event all in a day’s work. The Flames aren’t officially shopping their captain, but when they do the price will be enormous. The Penguins will — and do — have interest in Jarome Iginla. What playoff team wouldn’t want Jarome Iginla?”

Pierre Lebrun – ESPN.go.com – “The Penguins have a number of young defensemen in their organization who are drawing interest, but we’ll see just how keen Shero is to divest himself of any of them for a rental player… the Penguins are believed to have interest in Flames winger Jarome Iginla but just how much they’d be willing to pay on that front, or whether Iginla would have any interest in waiving his no-trade clause to go to Pittsburgh, who knows. Not to mention that the Flames haven’t yet decided whether they’re even moving Iginla”
Michael Arace – The Columbus Dispatch – He (Kekalainen, Columbus GM) also was clear that this particular rumor (the Jack Johnson one) was baseless. “It’s silly,” he said. “I went to watch a game. Ray Shero is a friend of mine.” . How close are they? Before Kekalainen returned to Finland in 2010, he sold his car to Shero.
*Krundles Thoughts: For all anyone knows the Bluejackets were here scouting Tampa Bay’s Vincent Lecavalier
Not a rumor… Penguins newly signed Tom Kostopoulos was nabbed off of the waiver wire by the NJ Devils today when Pens tried to send him to the WBS Pens.

Greg Wyshynski – PuckDaddy.com – “… oh, those Jarome Iginla rumors just won’t stop. But the Penguins have also been after a defenseman who can man the point on the power play… There’s been talk that Sergei Gonchar could return to the Pens if the Ottawa Senators have him on the block… Now, another name has surfaced, and it’s one that makes sense on a lot of fronts: Jack Johnson of the Columbus Blue Jackets.”
Colin Dambrauskas – HockeyBuzz.com – “On the contrary, actually, by choosing to move a piece like (Jarome) Iginla to a potential Stanley Cup contending team like the Penguins, for instance, the Flames have the ability to bring in some promising youth. Prospects that can the help team immediately, down the road, or both. A player like Iginla being moved to the Penguins would increase their odds at success substantially I feel..”
Rob Rossi – Chipped Ice – “This past summer, while pursing free-agent defenseman Ryan Suter, the Penguins envisioned paring Letang with an elite partner. Jack Johnson, 26, could potentially fit that description. He was the third overall pick in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft and is a longtime friend of Penguins captain Sidney Crosby.”
* Krundles thoughts: Why on earth would the Penguins go after another defenseman? A powerplay specialist who’s best season was 8 goals? If the Pens are talking with Columbus, you need look no further than RJ Umberger who is having a horrible year after 4 years of 20+ goals.

Bruce Garrioch – IFPress.com – “While the Penguins’ captain is doing a good job setting a torrid scoring pace this season, Pittsburgh general manager Ray Shero is expected to go shopping for another winger and possibly a defenceman before the April 3 trade deadline. It’s believed the Penguins – among other teams – have targeted Calgary Flames winger Jarome Iginla, who will be a unrestricted free agent July 5, as a possibility to play on a line with Crosby.”

Eklund – HockeyBuzz.com – “..Yet, with his contract eligible for renewal after this season, I keep hearing rumblings of other teams “preparing” to put forth huge contracts for Letang… In fact I have even have had it said to me a big part of the Canadiens hesitance to go long term and all-in with Subban was because Montreal really wants to be involved in going hard for Letang next summer when he is a UFA or “should Pittsburgh determine they can’t re-sign Letang…”
*Krundle’s Thoughts: This is interesting to note because of what happened with Jordan Staal. Letang makes his home in Montreal and most likely wants to play there. Though with the hiring of Michel Therrien as the Habs head coach, and Letang’s non defensive minded play, there is a chance they would not be interested in him. If Letang has been approached by Shero and is not willing to negotiate, he could be traded.

Adam Gretz – CBSSports.com – “If those injuries start to catch up to them and they should happen to fall out of the playoff race, that could mean longtime Senator (and captain) Daniel Alfredsson could be put on the trading block. And if that happens, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins could be interested in adding him to their lineup, according to Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun.”

Disco Stu – PenguinPoop.com – “GM Ray Shero stopped off in Minnesota while the rest of the team headed to Winnipeg on Thursday. He spent some time meeting with former co-workers, Wild GM Chuck Fletcher and Coach Mike Yeo. Word has it that he was doing a little scouting while there as well and that he might have interest in either Devin Setoguchi or Pierre-Marc Bouchard. Neither would cost the Pens more than a draft pick or a low level minor leaguer at this point and either one might be worth taking a flyer on”

The Fourth Period – “It’s believed the Penguins are once again taking a look at Toronto Maple Leafs forward Nikolai Kulemin. Malkin, who currently leads the Penguins in assists with 10, played alongside Kulemin during the lockout in the KHL. Last season, the Penguins inquired about Kulemin’s availability, but a deal was never finalized and then-GM Brian Burke reportedly turned down a first-round pick in exchange for him”
