Here is a video of Matt Cooke and Erik Karlsson going into the boards. Accident? Or is it Matt Cooke being the old Matt Cooke? It looks like an accident to me.

  1. Poor Steve Moore. He didnt deserve what Bertuzzi did to him….thats should have been reserved for Matt Cooke….who wouldnt want to see that rat in a neckbrace? and perpetual claims court

  2. All offense to all but he changed his way of play because his wife almost died. He had 8 penalties last season and 20 goals. Not to mention he has a Stanley cup ring. Don Cherry the most beloved man even stuck up for him. Now this won’t change any of your closed minded ways of thinking but this is the facts of him for the last 2 years.

  3. Calm down dude, people are emotional as they should be, the reigning norris d-man sustains a season ending injury from Cooke who is as greasy as a chicken finger and saying they don’t deserve to watch the sport is just going to make them angrier. There is a friggin four minute long video of his cheapshots, he has ended careers of better players then himself his whole life and has expertly learned how to injure and make it look accidental. I’m not saying he did it but I can’t 100% rule it out.

  4. Matt cooke needs to be used as an example of what dirty rotten players are! How can this goon have a reputation like his and the league not even do a thing? i guess thats what unions are for protecting the dogscrewers that dont know what there doing! the game is suffering this year and if it wasnt for the ottawa senators i would have lost interest in the nhl alltogether. brandon s …please do something, players like cooke spoil the beauty of the game.thank you

  5. Do you people really not see Karlsson push into Cooke with his upper body throwing Cooke off balance before they both run into the boards and momentum takes over?? He’s leaning backwards and looking the other way, and this is intentional?? A lot of people are choosing what they want to see here.

  6. your dumb anybody can see this is accidental if one of the leafs players did it would you be saying the same thing? I think not

  7. Cooke is a toad, and the it could be on purpose but I don’t think it is. Both players were off balance and if it was intentional, Cooke would have put more force into it.(Waiting for hate messages from penguins fans)

  8. I am a huge Sens fan and I think Matt Cooke is a dirty player BUT this was a hockey play, totally accidental. Cooke and Karlsson were jousting up high and it looks as though Cooke was trying to maintain his balance while driving Karlsson into the boards.

  9. Much as I hate Matt Cooke, that was completely accidental. He was looking to pin Karlsson against the board while looking to his right for the puck that was coming around the boards.Godspeed to a quick return to the ice for Karlsson. Cooke will one day get what’s coming to him for all the dirty things he’s done over his career.

  10. I agree, I mean this is really a serious injury, Matt Cooke should be banned for this. I just hope Karlsson have a full and speedy recovery.

  11. If Cooke wasn’t trying to get his knee right behind Karlsson’s in an attempt to injure then his skate would’ve been on the ground and the injury wouldn’t have happened. How many more games need to be missed due to his dirty play before the league has enough of him?

  12. yes i mean it, i know alot of people who think it is fake. Listen, it’s way easier than i thought do a few surveys and boom a few $100 extra in your bank every week. i found it here: bit.ly\XT25ey

  13. if you don’t care you really can’t say a whole lot towards the situation can ya? Mistakes happen, let the professionals decide if it’s legit. They get paid to do so. then you can not care and complain about that too haha

  14. Good statement, not like we have a say in the matter but it is good speculation is there to make sure this kind of conduct is looked at, and just goes to show how bad habits can bite ya in the ass.

  15. Not intentional? We can’t know for sure, but the guy has a history. Search “Matt Cooke Cheapshotting History” in youtube. There’s a 4 min video with cheap shot after cheap shot.

  16. If you think Cooke did this on purpose you either are a sens fan or you don’t know anything about hockey. Hockey experts who know 1000 times more hockey than you guys have analyzed this play and came to the conclusion that it was not intentional. If you think this was intentional start watching a different sport because you are a disgrace to hockey.

  17. Looked like a kick or attempted slew at first glance. Why did Cooke’s left foot come up when he should be planting?

  18. that was definitely on purpose. he might not have wanted to end his season but he was definitely trying to hurt him somehow. he stomped, then sliced. hes the dirtiest player in the nhl. probably in the top ten of all time dirtiest scumbag players. guys like him and marchand should be banned from the league.

  19. Karlsson is ahead of him, how the hell is he gonna get his leg in front of him. He clearly uses his stick to try and lift Karlsson, and uses his left leg for extra leverage. Keep clicking on 0:11 watch how he extends his leg, you don’t think he knows where his skate is? seriously! I don’t even care but he did it on purpose.

  20. TOTAL INTENT TO STOMP!!! NO ONE PUTS A LEG DOWN LIKE THAT…DIRTY AS HELL…COOKE KNOWS HIMSELF HE DID IT ON PURPOSE!! EVERYTIME YOU LOOK AT IT…..TOTAL STOMP!

  21. how is he not off-balance? he was skating straight at the puck and karlsson cut in front of him… I’m sure you know much better than the NHL review team (who have given suspensions for much less). If you knew anything about Matt Cooke you’d know that he has turned his game around and doesn’t play like that anymore. Even Brendan Shanahan (the NHL VP and head disciplinarian) praised Cooke on changing his game from his cheap ways to be a more productive hockey player. Research before you talk shit

  22. no, he tries to place his leg to the outside of Karlsson’s leg to get positioning on him. He gets off balance and when they crash into the boards his skate comes down. Cooke isn’t even LOOKING at Karlsson. This same play happens every single game. Players have to try to use their legs to get positioning in the boards against other players. It was unfortunate what happened, and if you don’t believe me, listen to every sports analyst (outside ottawa) in the business right now. It was an accident.

  23. Switchfoot’s The Sound playing in the backgroung: awesomeOwning Karlsson on my fantasy team: not so much 🙁

  24. Cooke = dirty player, repeat offender, he’s caused too many serious injuries… Ban him from the NHL!

  25. You’re a complete dumbass. That’s a legit play to drive the knee through the legs and wedge the player against the boards. Both Erik and Cooke were off balance during this incident which caused the injury to happen. The league reviewed it, and also many hockey analysts and they are all in agreement that there was no intent to injure.

  26. already was aware of that when making the post. the point was to make an argument that being irresponsible with your skates should be held accountable as much, or more, as skaters who are irresponsible with their sticks.

  27. You have never played the game, or watched it apparently either. A defender will put his leg betwen the offensive players legs stopping them from getting away without using the stick to hook or hold the player.

  28. You are absolutely right. I’ve played the game for more than 30 years and done that hundreds of times. It happens in every NHL game every night. But you can’t be surprised a person named Jorge Guitierrez doesn’t see that, clearly he never played the game before.

  29. I’ve never heard a person who has played hockey say this was intentional. Purely accidental. I hate Cooke as much or more than the next person but this wasn’t his fault, sometimes bad stuff just happens.

  30. Brendan Shanahan, however, didn’t see it that way, and after reviewing the incident, informed both teams this morning there will be no further action by the league.

  31. So you should apply for Brendan Shanahan’s job since you are apparently smarter and have more experience than him….

  32. Any ignorant nitwit could come to your idiotic conclusion by watching the play in slow motion. Since you are a Leaf fan I’ll assume you are just ignorant. Not too bright Whore Hay.

  33. im a devils fan bro and i feel same as u. normally i wouldnt even care about this crap.

  34. as a devils fan aka bystander. im not taking sides here. but anyone who plays hockey knows that was reckless as fuck. im not sayin he inntentionally stepped on his leg. but seriously he is not off balance and there is zero reason to lift the leg there. cookes should be suspended solely on the fact that this is a reckless hit. weather or not it was on purposee will never get the answer to and honestly is beside the point.

  35. Do you understand the proper technique to pin a skater on the boards? Your inside leg/knee is supposed to go inbetween the skaters legs. This causes the pin. So EK’s legs come together, and MC keeps his knee going to cause the pin, except there is no space for it to go. I dislike Cooke as much as the next guy, but he wasn’t even looking at EK’s heel. That’s a tough cheapshot to pull for anybody.

  36. it’s intentional. it’s nhl’s very own ‘ron artest’ at work again.the guy has problems.

  37. I have watched this replay 25-30 times and am convinced this was as intentional as the day is long. No player goes into the boards and lifts his leg 16 to 18″ off the ice and slams it down on the back of another plays (Karlsons) leg and maintains his balance throughout the entire incident like this – without intent to injure.. . No one deserves this type of injury or bullshit play. ….

  38. How the NHL continues to allow these goons to take out the brightest players in the game unpunished is beyond me.

  39. he was not going for the Achilles; however, cooke knew he had some piece of karlsson and his attempt was to hurt.

  40. The only reason that anybody talks about this being intentional is because it’s Cooke. Any other person, and you look at this play and say “how the hell would that be intentional?”You just can’t stomp on somebody’s tendon intentionally while you’re going for the puck like that. It’s an accident.

  41. Watch it at full speed, not guilty. Watch it in slow motion, and wearing a Sens jersey….guilty. NHL sees it as accidental and so should other. Pens fans can feel the pain after the Staal/Subban incident.

  42. i dont think there has been any injuries like this in the nhl, maybe there was i dont rememebr any but his leg was up even when he had his face turned to karlsson and he got hit in the face with his glove so he put his skate right behind his foot like a little bitch that he is, and i dont know about you but even with my eyes close i can still kick accuratley and everything cause ive been moving for 22 years! your used to it

  43. im a bruins fan and i think matt cooke is a big piece of shit but this was def not intentional at all its goddamn near impossible, its a freak accident hes not looking at karlsson at all and just cause its cooke everyone jumps on the intend to injure bandwagon gimme a break

  44. teams should start systematically targetting matt cooke. if someone doesnt end his career hes going to end an innocent players again real soon.

  45. This was an accident. This was an accident. This was an accident. This was an accident. This was an accident. This was an accident. Go PENS! This was an accident. This was an accident. This was an accident. This was an accident. This was an accident. This was an accident. This was an accident. This was an accident. This was an accident.

  46. ohhh shit!! WHY KARLSSON… anyone else. of course i dont hope this to anyone but why just karlsson..

  47. his eyes are on the puck the whole time, doesnt even look in the direction of karlsson’s leg

  48. why is his foot up in the first place? using your leg to leverage someone into the boards isnt part of a legal body check. if your going to be irresponsible with your BLADED FEET, you should be punished.

  49. I’d hope Neil would knock him out. Forget not talking to him, whether it was intentional or not, but with Cooke history….

  50. Cooke you sneaky son of a bitc…. with Spezza and now Karlsson out, Ottawa is in big trouble,

  51. You have clearly never played hockey before, because when you’re driving someone into the boards you have 2 skates on the ice for more leverage, then to pin them you put your stick in between their legs. You have no clue what you’re talking about so please just stop.

  52. It’s precisely because it’s a common play that it could have been set up. Not saying it is, but it could have been.

  53. This is terrible for fans of the league. Huge blow to the Sens who’ve been very good in what’s been and should remain an incredibly tough division. While I disagreed with him getting the Norris he is an excellent player and probably one of the 5 most entertaining in the league.

  54. 2 suspensions for head hits, and now this shit.. Fuck Matt Cooke, I hope shitsburgh trades him to the sens, and nobody speaks to him.

  55. @Jorge Guiterrez damn right guys takin out premier players with unnecessary violence he should be imprisoned

  56. It was a accident ur pricks. Cry about karlson knows its and accident. Fuck off canada sorry the pens have ur idol crosby

  57. Laughing at all the butthurt Ottawa fans, it wasn’t a dirty hit shit happens like this all the time in hockey get used to it.

  58. Pause the video at the moment of the injury (around 3 sec). Karlsson’s hands are up near Cooke’s face, Cooke’s head is turned away from Karlsson’s body and Cooke’s attempted to look down toward the puck. So Cooke intentionally brought the blade of his skate down into the small opening between the back of Karlsson’s skate and the back of his shin guard? Seem’s to me that it would be pretty difficult even if he was trying.

  59. WOW, this was entirely intentional! If that dirty lil bitch isnt suspended, ima kill the fucker myself. Ima buy tickets to the next sens pens game right behind the bench and murk the lil cunt with a skate blade to the Jugular. This guy needs to be put down. Hes a hazard to the NHL. Unbelievaible.

  60. Nope, he was trying to get his knee up between his legs, that way he’s pinned against the boards. Very common move for defensemen. If this wasn’t Cooke, nobody would be even looking at it. I hate Matt Cooke as much as the next guy, but this was not intentional.

  61. If it was anyone else I would say not intentional, but with Cooke history, it’s hard to believe. Ask Savard.

  62. You all are ignorant. There’s no way this was intentional. Cooke most likely lost control for a second. Accidents like this happen. Skaters know the injuries they can substaine during a game.Stop pointing the finger at Pittsburgh you jealous pricks.

  63. Wow Matt Cooke is really good at fucking with and/or ending players’ careers. Remember Marc Savard? Ya probably not. He had a very promising future in the NHL until this bitch gave him one of the most intentionally dirty hits in the history of the league.. elbow to the head with speed when he wasn’t looking.I don’t care if this was an accident (which it may not even be), Matt Cooke needs to be banned from the NHL!!

  64. Such a bummer this had to happen to such a great player. I feel bad for the Sens. First Spezza now Karlsson.. Obvious that both of them probably won’t play again this year. Hopefully it doesn’t linger into next season. Injuries like these are no joke.

  65. It doesn’t LOOK intentional… That’s how Cooke’s dirty plays have “evolved”.

  66. why I’m not surprised that Cooke did this? Fuck you and your whole family for injuring the best defenseman in the world

  67. Speaking as a Sens fan, I don’t believe it was intentional but I do believe it was reckless and he should be held accountable for it. Ultimately its up to the league to decide what to do with Cooke. It will be interesting to see what happens. If Cooke raises his skate blade like that and comes down near a player, he needs to be more aware obviously of where its coming down because of the injury it can cause as seen above. I would suspend him to send a message.

    1. Exactly right – It’s like a player being accountable for swinging his stick high and hitting someone in the face – it may not be intentional, but you still gotta pay the consequences

  68. Looks to me deliberate Cooke and the Pens are dirty. Crosby and Malkin cry all game long looking to draw penalties. CRY CRY CRY they should change the team name to Cry Babies.

  69. if you watch his left knee hes riding it up his ass during the hit, he’s not off balance, he’s legit setting it up to plant his foot exactly where it landed. This is the sneakiest one Cooke has done. He’s the dirtiest mother fucker in the game. I can’t believe ppl are defending him. Look at his history of cheap shots its disgusting. Im a fuckin Leaf fan, i don’t care about the Sens, but this shit is disgusting.

  70. I’ve been a huge voice for the NHL to look at PK Subban and the injuries caused by his careless (I believe intentional) use of his skates. As a guy who played ice hockey I would look that 24’s balance during the play. Was he off balance and shifting his weight or was he completely balanced and looking (not with his eyes) to stomp on a very particular portion of a guys lower body. I’d hope the answer is no. Also when you look at the replay (at normal speed) he would not have had time to devise a scheme to injure the guy. THat said, viewing the play in slow motion solves nothing as far as intent. I hope the league keeps that in mind!

  71. I really just can’t see this being a dirty play.Try skating on one foot and then stomping with the other while going to the boards. Can’t be that easy. Just looks like Karlsson got leverage on him while Cooke’s trying to ride him into the boards, Cooke tried to get his feet back and planted in an unfortunate position. It just doesn’t look intentional at all to me.

  72. They showed the play over and over, it was an accident. Why did he get the 10 minute at the end? It was the other guy hitting him in the face. Its not the same Cooke but the NHL won’t believe it..

  73. Really? So you’re saying Cory Potter intentionally sliced the face of Taylor Hall ( His Teammate ). /watch?v=yxQSJTemaSA

  74. It’s Matt Cooke….what do you think the NHL will decide? The last 1.5 years of good behavior means nothing to them.

  75. Very unfortunate incident. Obviously it was completely unintentional as this is a very common play to drive the knee through the legs and wedge the player against the boards. Its clear Cooke was off balance causing him not to execute the move properly and thus the skate coming down on the back of the heel. I wish a quick and speedy recovery to Erik Karlsson.

  76. The thing I question is, why is Matt Cooke spreading his leg so far apart? If not hitting karlssons leg where would he be trying to plant the skate, past karlssons leg? His stance would be to wide for it to seem like a ‘hockey play’. Instead of trying to put his that is in the air on the ice right away to catch his balance he instead extends his knee to widen the stance. This routine only makes sense in hockey when you pin the players leg in between yours

  77. Cooke is just trying to ride Karlsson into the boards. With the new rules of the NHL these days, players can’t grab with their free hand, therefore they are adjusting by using their lower bodies, mostly knees. This kind of play happens every single game, just an unfortunate result for Karlsson. I used to hate Cooke back when he was a dirty player but he’s changed the way he plays, he no longer is looking to end careers.

  78. That is one suspicious looking play there Ill say that. It definitely is debatable wether he did that on purpose or not. id say only matt knows for sure and we know he will never admit that ( unless you meet him in a bar under the influence ) but it is definitely debatable

  79. He tries to flip him with his left knee, he knew exactly what he was doing. clearly on purpose!

  80. Matt Cooke has changed his game, he isn’t the dirty player that he used to be. This is clearly just bad luck. You can see Karlsson and Cooke’s legs get a little tied up going into the boards. Cookie loses his footing and is trying to regain it. I’ll be the first to admit that Cooke used to be dirty, but he’s not that type of player, and anyone around the league will tell you that. If that was Kunitz, or Dupuis, or Joe Vitale you’d be singing a whole different tune. It just happened to be Cookie.

  81. you would know about stupid — you just proved you do (of course, how could anyone ever believe Matt Cooke would do something cheap on purpose? yah, you make a great point – good luck in remedial) 🙂

  82. playing in your sister’s wreck league doesn’t count pal, if you’ve really played hockey you know that players know EXACTLY what they are doing with their skates….get your head out

  83. that’s a convincing argument…. if you’re thinking about idiots, you might well look in the mirror

  84. this was not accidental. I agree he did not intend to seriously injure him, but he cut his achilles tendon, he kicked his foot forward into the back of Karlsson’s leg. He was probably trying to give him a charlie horse, but intent is intent and this is probably his 50th time where cooke intended to hurt someone. Since the NHL is taking injury into account for suspensions, hopefully cooke will get at least 20 games for ending the season of one of the top defensemen in the League.

  85. look on the first replay you can clearly see him driving his skate down hard, as a player ,i know that Cooke knows exactly where his skate is there, a respectful player would not force the blade down on the back of someones unprotected leg like that.

  86. I’m a Canucks fan and we saw this act for a few years. You seem like a really reasonable Pens’ fan — unfortunately, most people only see incidents like this, through the lens of their own team and what’s best for it….in Cooke’s case, he’s done things like this too often to believe it was an ‘accident’…..he may not have totally planned this out, but he certainly knew his actions could lead to a bad injury. If I was a Pens’ fan I wouldn’t feel good about having Cooke on my team……

  87. it’s only a matter of time until someone grabs Cooke’s neck and drives it into the boards, paralyzing him —- not saying that is a good thing, but when someone deliberately tries to end as many careers as Cooke has (even if you disclude this incident, which is arguable) trouble is right around the corner — I’m not an Ottawa fan, but this is really too bad — Karlsson’s an amazing young talent, put out by a cheap, fringe player, looking for relevance IMO

  88. LOL….what?! A young, incredibly talented player has his season cut short and very possibly a career put in jeopardy (the rehab could be a biotch) — and this is as unfortunate for the multi-time, cheap-shot offender, Matt Cooke —- do a search on Cooke and his cheapshots and think about it

  89. Totally accidental, Cooke was trying to use his leg to pin Karlsson against the boards. Done every single time a puck is in the corner. The defender puts their knee between the other guys legs so they cannot get away without getting a penalty. I hate Cooke as much as anyone but this was just bad luck.

  90. As much as I am an oilers fan, I am also a hockey fan. Karlsson is a class act that anybody in the league would want on there team. Wish him a quick and speedy recovery.

  91. Yeah, tonight… not of sure the last time (before today) he played above a 3rd/4th line role. Maybe it is more recent than I remember… Not this season, that’s for sure.

  92. Number of PIMs doesn’t mean anything in a situation like this. You could name twenty players in the league that had more PIMs than Pronger the year he intentionally tried to stomp Kesler, or when Simon intentionally stomped Ruutu. Regardless, I didn’t say this was intentionally because there is certainly reasonable doubt, but it is a possibility given Cooke’s previous intentional attempts to injure.

  93. You are not smart. They were battling for position going into the boards. Karlsson’s right foot comes off the ice too. If it had come down and cut Cooke, would you have said he did it on purpose?

  94. Cooke, one of the dirtiest players in the leagues history injures Karlsson, one of the leagues top player. Coincidence ?

  95. I blame incidents like this on over-expansion, having so many spots available in the NHL causes players like Cooke and Torres to play in the league, players who aren’t strong enough or skilled enough to stand players up in mid ice so they take cheap career threatening shots on players who actually deserve to be in the league.. What ever happened to injuries being from big clean hits from a skilled player like Scott Stevens?

  96. I’m a Pens fan, yes. Today, watching the game, I even said to my buddy, I’m glad Cooke stopped hurting people, but it really diminished his role, because stirring up trouble was always his thing. I really hated Cooke after his last few injury causing incidents and was upset he wasn’t forced out of the league. However, I’d be really surprised if he did this on purpose… Only he knows his intent, but given his history, if suspended, he had it coming. Feeling for Karlsson, the Sens and their fans.

  97. His body maintained perfect posture all the while his left leg went up and down on Karlsson’s tendon within half a second. I honestly dont understand how anyone could think that the gesture was unintentioned. His left leg was the only part of his body that moved. This without even considering that it was Cooke, the fact that it was him just verifies what I said above.

  98. WIth Cooke’s history I find it hard to believe it wasn’t done with intent. Certainly the motion of the skate coming down onto the achilles like that is not from losing an edge. Guess we’ll never know! Another great player lost to a goon!

  99. I feel so bad for Karlsson, that’s an awful injury. I don’t think Cooke did this on purpose but it’s a very stupid very reckless play on his part to even have his foot up. Still deserves a suspension, and considering his past it should be a big one.

  100. Seems more like an unfortunate positioning than anything intentional. Should Cooke have had his skate up? No, but did he actually mean to do that? No.

  101. I do play and never have I seen some raise their leg like that when going for a hit. poor judgement on cooke, i just hope that it wasn’t intentional

  102. Was dirty in the past, but has cleaned up his game in recent years. He knew that if he didn’t, he’d have no career after his contract with pens was up. Every year we have one bad cut. Zednick a few years ago, faces get sliced frequently and of course the worst, Malarchuk… I agree, purely an accident.

  103. You don’t lift your leg that high in hockey for any reason, especially in a check. Another dirty hit by a notoriously dirty player.

  104. hockeydb.com/ ihdb/stats/leagues/seasons/teams/0000502012.htmlMalkin had more PIMs last year than Cooke. He had a change of heart.

  105. Bullshit, given Cooke’s history it could have easily been intentional. No one knows but him, but to say that its not a possibility is really dumb.

  106. Cooke’s not the same dirty player he was a few years ago… I can’t see him doing this intentionally. Blade just came up and down in an unfortunate position.

  107. i don’t know how I feel about this. GIven Cookes history though, tough to see it anything but intentional.

  108. I really hope Cook didn’t intentionally do this…cause I just can’t believe someone would take a blade and slice somebody, that’s mentally fucked up and killer type shit….

  109. Of course Matt Cooke would be one to do that, not saying he did it on purpose. It just seems he was in the wrong place at the wrong time here, but people will probably blame it him because of his past.Sucks for the Senators, first Spezza and now this.

  110. I bet you never played ice hockey in your whole life dude so don’t be saying shit like that unless you know what happens while playing hockey on ice. I have, it is fast that it’s impossible to even think Bc you don’t have time to think to do something like that on purpose. What a moron!

  111. That was a total freak accident. Matt Cooke did not intentionally do that on purpose. I don’t believe it for one second.

  112. I believe it’s 100% intentional. Cooke is known for this shit. I suspect he’ll get 5 games or more for it. That positioning doesn’t just happen. Why would his leg be lifting like that. It also looks almost like he was going for a slew foot.

  113. Its unfortunate but no way you can blame Cooke for this. Could have been anyone in that corner putting their skate down.
