Ex-Penguins Update: Final 2020-21 Regular Season Stats

May 31, 2021

With our Penguins out of the playoffs and nothing in particular to write about, I thought it would be a good time to post my season-ending ex-Penguins update.

The Blues’ David Perron paced the ex-Pens in assists (39) and points (58). He finished second to Arizona’s Phil Kessel with 19 goals. “Phil the Thrill” was runner up to Perron with 43 points. His 20 markers topped the list.

Other notables included Carolina’s Jordan Staal (16 goals, 38 points) and Florida’s Patric Hornqvist (14 goals, 32 points). “Horny” topped all regulars with a Corsi for of 55.

The blood-rival Capitals featured four former Pens. Defenseman Justin Schultz enjoyed a bounce-back campaign with 27 points, tied with Toronto’s Jake Muzzin for the top spot among expatriate defensemen. Conor Sheary (14 goals) and Daniel Sprong (13 goals, 17.6 shooting percentage) likewise revived their careers with solid seasons in DC. Speedy Carl Hagelin was effective (16 points) in a fourth line role.

In the efficiency department, Minnesota’s bedrock defender Ian Cole tied Muzzin for the best plus/minus among the Pens’ alum (+21). Kessel brought up the rear at minus-17.

Between the pipes, ageless Marc-Andre Fleury (Vegas) ranked third in the league in goals against average (1.98) and save percentage (.928) and second in shutouts (six).

Former black-and-gold draft pick Filip Gustavsson shone in a nine-game cameo for Ottawa, posting a 2.16 goals against average, .933 save percentage and a brilliant .857 quality starts percentage. Senators teammate Matt Murray showed signs of rebounding following a dreadful start to the season, posting shutouts in two of his last four outings.

Veteran Thomas Greiss (2.70 GAA, .912 SV%) was typically solid for a poor Detroit club.

  1. Wow, Phil a -17.

I don’t think Carolina will get by Tampa, it was a tight , exciting game #1 but Tampa too good.
I know hindsight , but should have protected Fleury, always love watching him play.
I have seen couple Ottawa games with Filip in net and he looked really good to me, but that is the past!!
I am not cheering(I can’t really cheer for another team) for but hoping Winnipeg gets to the cup. I have always liked coach Paul Maurice.

  2. Rick

It’s always great to see how our X-Pens are performing.

The biggest surprise for me has to be Schultz. He missed 10
games and still put up 27pts and +12. Pretty impressive.

Kessel did score some goals but he was still on track to finish
poorly in the plus-minus department. Not taking up for Sully but
this frustrates Coaches. I’m sure of the reason but it just felt like
after Phil’s first 2 or 3yrs here he got really complacent defensively.

As for Perron – I always like him – he has a good feel/hockey IQ and
plays with an edge. It doesn’t surprise me he’s doing well.

I think The Other Rick may be right – Sprong may of grown up. He had
a nice year with the Caps.

  3. Hey Rick,

As Always, thank you for the leg work of keeping us up to date on Penguin Alum.

I always liked Perron. Wish he could have made it here. Unfortunately he wasn’t a good fit. It is good to see him still rolling along.

It is also good to see Phil still putting up Numbers, even without good let alone generational talent around him.

Do you think Staal and Carolina can get out of the Div?

Just a couple of other things – don’t know if Sprong has grown up yet (by all accounts from those I know who played with and against him, he was a jerk) but just comparing his numbers to Simon’s numbers and thinking about the arguments of yesteryear, Sprong was by far the better player. Without Crosby to bouy him up Simon is falling flat (as his with or without you numbers showed even here in the ‘burg) while Sprong was able to still score in Ana. Hopefully the kid finally grew up and can start a career. Even if it is for the Caps.

Finally, told-you-so number 2, it is still too early to say that Gustavsson is going to cut it in the NHL. Playing in the only Division weaker than our Pens, the kid posted a 0.937 Sv%. How bad is that trade looking now? (Cole, Gustavsson, a 1st rnd Pick and flip-flopped 3rds was it?) for Bressard? (Reaves was sort of part of the deal to justify the salary moves but not talking more about it since that was a different deal in the records).

Even the flipping of Bressard and Sheehan for Bjugstad and McCann really aren’t standing the water test.
