Is Hextall Truly to Blame for the Penguins’ Present Plight?

I was mulling over our Penguins the other day when a thought popped into my head.

Is our present plight really all Ron Hextall’s fault? After all, there are lots of factors that can contribute to a team’s decline. Not all of them directly attributable to a GM’s performance.

I decided to take a look at the team the recently deposed exec inherited from Jim Rutherford when he was named general manager on February 9, 2021, and compare it to the team we have now.

For comparison’s sake, I eliminated fringe players and listed the 25 most prominent players for each team.

First up, the 2020-21 squad.

Center Age Cap Hit Status
Crosby 33 $8.7 M
Malkin 34 $9.5 M
Blueger 26 $750 K RFA
Jankowski 26 $700 K UFA
Lafferty 25 $750 K
Gaudreau 27 $700 K UFA
Left Wing Age Cap Hit Status
Guentzel 26 $6.0 M
Zucker 29 $5.5 M
McCann 24 $2.94 M RFA
Tanev 29 $3.5 M
Right Wing Age Cap Hit Status
Rust 28 $3.5 M
Kapanen 24 $3.2 M
Rodrigues 27 $700 K UFA
Aston-Reese 26 $1.0 M RFA
Sceviour 31 $1.2 M UFA
Left Defense Age Cap Hit Status
Dumoulin 29 $4.1 M
Pettersson 24 $4.025 M
Matheson 26 $4.875 M
Joseph 21 $863 K
Right Defense Age Cap Hit Status
Letang 33 $7.25 M
Marino 23 $4.4 M
Ceci 27 $1.25 M UFA
Ruhwedel 30 $750 K UFA
Goalie Age Cap Hit Status
Jarry 25 $3.5 M
DeSmith 29 $1.25 M
  26.23 Average Age $80.2 M

The first thing that jumps out at me is age. Only five of the players listed were age 30 and older, while 20 were in their 20s. Overall, we featured a really nice blend of youth and experience.

My second thought? This was a pretty darn good team. Following an embarrassing ouster at the hands of the 24th-seed Canadiens in the bubble round of the playoffs the previous August, Rutherford had given the black-and-gold a vigorous overhaul during the offseason.

In particular, there was plenty of affordable forward depth on hand with the likes of Jared McCann, Brandon Tanev, Evan Rodrigues, Frédérick Gaudreau and Zach-Aston Reese. Indeed, the ZAR-Turbo-Teddy Blueger unit was rated as one of the best energy/shutdown lines in the NHL.

On the blue line, John Marino, Mike Matheson and Marcus Pettersson formed the hub of a promising and mobile young defense. Cody Ceci, a former first-round pick of the Senators, proved to be a solid addition. He and Matheson displayed good chemistry and gave the Pens an excellent third pairing. In fact, all the tandems were good.

The only glaring hole? Third-line center, which Hextall ably filled with his surprise deadline acquisition of veteran Jeff Carter.

While there was some work to be done at season’s end in the RFA/UFA realm, particularly among the depth forwards, and an expansion draft to prepare for, nothing seemed insurmountable.

Now fast forward to our present team.

Center Age  Cap Hit Status
Crosby 35 $8.7 M

Poehling 24 $750 K RFA
Carter 38 $3.125 M
Bonino 34 $1.025 M UFA
Left Wing Age  Cap Hit Status
Guentzel 28 $6.0 M
Zucker 31 $5.5 M UFA
Granlund 30 $5.0 M
O’Connor 24 $750 K RFA
Right Wing Age Cap Hit Status
Rakell 29 $5.0 M
Rust 30 $5.125 M
Heinen 27 $1.0 M UFA
Archibald 30 $900 K UFA
Nylander 24 $750 K RFA
Left Defense Age Cap Hit Status
Dumoulin 31 $4.1 M UFA
Pettersson 26 $4.025 M
Joseph 23 $825 K
Kulikov 32 $2.25 M UFA
Right Defense Age Cap Hit Status
Letang 35 $6.1 M
Petry 35 $6.25 M
Rutta 32 $2.75 M
Ruhwedel 32 $800 K
Friedman 27 $775 K
Goalie Age Cap Hit Status
Jarry 27 $3.5 M UFA
DeSmith 31 $1.8 M
  28.88 Average Age $82.3 M

As the old saying goes, a picture’s worth a thousand words. Or should I say, read ‘em and weep.

My first thought in scanning our current roster?

Dear Lord, what happened?

Again, our age jumps off the page…in a bad way. In stark contrast to the team Hextall inherited, 15 players on the list who finished the regular season were aged 30 and older, including five aged 35 and older.

Talk about aging over night!

Gone is the good young depth, especially up front. Partly a result of the disastrous decision to protect Carter in the aforementioned expansion draft at the expense of losing McCann and Tanev, not to mention allowing affordable and useful free agents like Gaudreau and Rodrigues to walk. In their stead, Hextall added comparative graybeards like Carter, Mikael Granlund and Nick Bonino (sorry Bones).

Likewise, the defense morphed from a mobile young bunch into an aging collection of plow horses, especially on the right side.

The verdict?

Hextall had his victories to be sure, most notably the deadline acquisitions of Carter (but not extending him) and scoring winger Rickard Rakell, and inking core players Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, Bryan Rust and Rakell to bargain-rate extensions (albeit ones laced with term and no-movement clauses). However, his moves to flesh out the supporting cast for the most part backfired while greatly accelerating the aging process and the team’s overall decline.

  1. The other Rick is spot on….Sullivan will continue to only coach one way never mind if the team suffers for it….past time for him to go

  2. Hey Rick,

    A couple of quick notes;

First, there is a 2 year difference between 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 and a 2.65 year difference between the two seasons, roughly the difference in the age of the Core Players, just a slight increase. So was it really Hextall’s choice to age the team over night? Not really. It wasn’t over night aging but for the most part the difference in aging over 2 seasons.

Second, in 2020-2021 the avg age of the Pens roster may have been 26.23 but the avg age of the player Sullivan deployed was 27.68 ((age x TOIind)/TOIteam), or 1.45 years older than the average. The average age of the team’s roster this past season was 28.88 but the average age of the player Sully deployed was 30.50 or 1.62 year older than the average. Seriously, our Coach Sullivan, on average deployed a 30.50 year old skater. And if not for injuries to Bonino and Kulikov at the end of the season and Petry and Rutta during and throughout the season, that number would have been far worse.

Therefore, the age difference between our Penguins and other teams falls squarely on Sullivan. He always opts for the fossil over the kid, when he is given a choice. And that explains why kids like Hallander and Lindberg abandoned this pathetic Coach and skip to Europe

Hextall needed to go, as well as Burke and Pryor, but so does Sullivan need a trip to window A. If he isn’t summarily dumped, the new GM has to strip him of all his veterans so he is forced to learn how to Coach.
