Penguins Deal Eller to the Capitals for Picks

Apparently, Penguins GM Kyle Dubas is serious about shaking up the status quo of his floundering hockey club.

In what might be the first of many such moves, Dubas dealt center Lars Eller to the Capitals for a fifth-round pick in the 2025 Entry Draft and a third-round pick in 2027.

Definitely a case of subtraction by subtraction.

During his season and change in the ‘Burgh, Eller proved to be a leader and, dare I say, the team’s conscience. Straightforward and stand-up, he wasn’t afraid to criticize his team’s efforts or, as all-too-often was the case, lack of.

The 6’2” 205-pounder proved to be a pleasant surprise offensively as well, notching 15 goals and 31 points in 82 games last season while anchoring the third line, including four power-play goals. This season the 35-year-old Dane had four goals and seven points in 17 games while winning 56 percent of his draws.

To say he’ll be missed is an understatement. In my humble opinion, he’s been the best of Dubas’s additions. However, with the Pens on a slow boat to Palookaville, it only makes sense to cash in our trade chips for draft capital (no pun intended).

For Eller, it’ll be old home week. He spent six-plus seasons with the Caps from 2016 through 2023.

Best wishes, Lars, and thanks for your effort, class and professionalism.

  1. He was possibly the most tradable asset the Pens had. A good value, over performing, and no stupid clauses preventing a trade.

No trade clauses don’t prevent Dubas from moving a player. Usually in these situations when a player
realizes he doesn’t fit into a teams future plans he’ll agree to waive any no trade clause.

  2. Hey Rick,

I would think this trade means they are giving up the ghost. Eller is one of the better veterans on this roster. Don’t take that as me being upset, please. I like Eller but making room for kids and getting picks does start to give me hope (assuming we get a better Coach too).
