As we enter the holidays, I decided to take a break from writing about our Penguins to address another issue that’s on my heart.
First, a little back story.
Over the past couple of years, I’ve grown extremely close to a dear friend’s pit bull named Zeus. In addition our daily “sniff ‘n’ strolls” around the neighborhood, I occasionally doggy sit.
Plain and simple, “Zeusie” has captured my heart and brought so much joy into my life. He’s just the best and sweetest dog imaginable. Smart, loyal, ultra-affectionate…even considerate. He’s rekindled a love for our four-legged friends that I had as a child but somehow misplaced as an adult.
Because of Zeus, who is a rescue, I decided to give to Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh on a monthly basis. I occasionally give to other charities such as the Beaver County Humane Society as well. I don’t make much money so I can’t afford to give a lot, but I do what I can. I figure giving even a little is better than giving nothing at all.
After a time, I began to be inundated with requests from other charities, some I’d heard of and some I hadn’t. (Note: this wasn’t due to giving to Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh but seemed to follow after I gave to another charity that isn’t mentioned.)
To be honest, at first it was kind of discouraging. I can’t possibly give to all the organizations that ask. But it demonstrates just how great a need there is.
I know money is tight for so many folks, especially those with families to support. But if you’re able this holiday season, I encourage you to identify a favorite charity and give. Or volunteer your time.
I’ve heard it said that if we make our little corner of the world even a little better, we’re doing God’s work. Giving even a little to those less fortunate can make a big difference.
Thank you.
May the good Lord bless you and your loved ones this holiday season.
