Penguins’ captain Sidney Crosby will miss tonight’s Metro matchup with the Rangers at Madison Square Garden due to a presumed arm injury. Emil Bemström has been recalled from the Pens’ Wilkes-Barre/Scranton affiliate to take Sid’s place.
Acquired last February from the Blue Jackets for a sixth-round pick and Alex Nylander, the 25-year-old Swedish forward is enjoying a banner season for the Baby Pens. He’s amassed 19 goals and 41 points, both team highs, and recently participated in the AHL All-Star Game.
In 228 career NHL games spread over five seasons, Bemström’s tallied 34 goals and 74 points. He has three goals and five points in 24 games with the Pens, all recorded down the homestretch last spring.
Ironically, Crosby’s iron-man streak will be snapped at 229 games (one more than Bemström’s career big-league total) should Sid sit out as anticipated.
