Flyers Dan Carcillo Killing Penalties, Seriously?

The NHL is holding a hearing with Daniel Carcillo at 3pm this afternoon about the cheap shot he took on the face-off against Max Talbot. The NHL needs to seriously look into some rule changes for the end of both playoff games and regular season games.

Last night with 14 seconds left in the game, the Flyers were killing a 5 on 3 penalty and Ryan Parent slashed then cross check face planted Jordan Staal into the boards. What did he get for it? A two minute penalty for cross checking which in no way had a possibility of effecting the play on the ice. Basically once the 5 on 3 occurred it was possible for the Flyers to injure the Penguin players with absolutely no recourse.

With 7 seconds left the Flyers put enforcer Daniel Carcillo a former Penguin draft pick on the ice to kill the 5 on 3, he then proceeded to butt end Max Talbot in the face.  This is a guy who had all of 43 seconds penalty killing time for the Flyers during the regular season. The majority, 25 seconds, of which was during a 4-1 blowout loss to the NY Rangers. Are you seeing a trend?

While I’m sure that the 3pm hearing for Carcillo will end up nothing more than a verbal scolding over the phone, the NHL needs to hold a hearing for GM Paul Holmgren and coach John Stevens.  Does Bettman remember warning flyers GM Paul Holmgren a year and a half ago about their on-ice play?

I’m sure everyone is familiar with hockey rule #47.22 –  “A player or goalkeeper who is deemed to be the instigator of an altercation in the final five (5) minutes of regulation  time or at anytime in overtime, shall automatically be suspended for one game. The Director of Hockey Operations will review every such incident and may rescind the suspension based on a number of criteria. The criteria for the review shall include, but not limited to, the score, previous incidents, etc….”

While there was no instigator of an altercation, the NHL still needs two new rules one for regular season and one for playoffs.

In the regular season, a game cannot end while the lower scoring team is on the power play. This will stop teams from tackling a player on a breakaway with 10 seconds left when they are winning and many other things. Tied games cannot end until all penalties are over, not including game misconducts.

This is a rule that works fantastic for the NFL and would definitely create more excitement at the end of games

In the playoffs, if a team that is down by more than two goals has three penalties with under a minute left of these sorts: Slashing, Cross Checking, Instigation, High Sticking, Butt Ending, Elbowing, Clipping, Charging … all of the ones that injure the other player, delay of game, too many men type penalties would not count. Third penalty results in players suspended for one game and a team fine.  It’s that simple.

They can name the rule the Flyers need to learn how to play hockey so they don’t have to send goons out at the end of the game rule or just rule #47.23.

  1. @ Justin37

The FLYS have been in serious salary cap problems year after year. It began with signing human pylons Derian Hatcher and Mike Rathje who are still racking-up $7 million against the cap. Add another almost $11 million for Daniel Briere and Scott Hartnell and you begin to see the picture. Yet, another $6.4 million to Kimmo Timonen and that’s $24 million to really… just not good management decisions.
This is why they also have players like Carcillo, Cote, Asham… the Carcillo acquisition being made because of what the Flyers claimed was to upgrade their fighting ability! This fruitcake fights alright… but has always been one shift away from taking a five-minute major that could lose a game for his team. Scottie Upshall and a 2nd round draft pick… IMHO it was more about Briere coming back and searching for cap space. It’s not like Upshall was setting anything on fire but he and a 2nd round pick for what?? A loose caboose!

The Pens likely will go with the same lineup and seeing Godard, Boucher and Satan on the ice for extra practice suggests that Godard sits. Why change anything.

  2. @ PenQuin
Maybe Stevens was attempting to communicate a message to Hartnell but Hartnell didn’t send Danny Carcillo out for the face-off… that was all Stevens. It’s typical maggot mind-set.

  3. @Krundle….To Call Carcillo an enforcer is a joke, this guy is nothing more than a Mathew Barnaby wantabe..

@Hook….I know that you have been saying for years what a joke Hartnell is as a Hockey player. I always thought of him as an Ulf Sanuellson, or Dino Cicerreli type (love him on your team, hate him otherwise)…..but you were proven correct with this game…He is nothing but a puppy drowing moron…

The simple facts is that there is not a single Penguin player intimaded by any Flyers….Don’t change a thing…Dressing Goddard would only be stooping to their level….

The Flyer players all ready know that they have no chance of winning the series….The funniest part about it is that Martin Biron will be blamed instaed of Booby Clarke, who still thinks it is 1974,,,,,

BTW…..How did the 13 Shot Ovechkin do last night, Stealth? Puck “F…ing” Hog

  4. I was under the impression that John Stevens players tuned him out. I also understand that Mike Richards was upset with those players, especially Scott Hartnell. Stevens kept Hartnell on the bench awhile after his second penalty. Hartnell didn`t get it, and lost full control of his mind and instructions from Stevens. “Stay out of the penalty box.” The Flyers mentality of intimidation is absolutely ridiculous, it doesn`t work and hasn`t for many years. Every time they give the Pens a power play, they are allowing the Pens in their end while they have the harder job in killing off the penalties. It not only gives the Pens the possession of the puck each time but disrupts the Flyers own offensive game and the time element to score their own goals. Even if we don`t score on the pp, it changes the game completely in our favor. I am in agreement that the Pens need to come out tomorrow night and pound the Flyers like they did in game one. If the Pens win tomorrows game in the same manor they did game one, this series is over.

  5. Friday night the Pen’s need to come out and hit and pound again make the Flyers get mad and take stupid penalties, I know the PP is terrible but they only need to score three goals to win each game. and don’t forget Marty was fighting the puck all game, just shoot from anywhere, watch Tyler!!!!!!!!!

  6. Carcillo gets a one-game suspension. I always felt another option would be for the Penguins to get a choice like have him have to skate 5 minutes more than in the previous game. That would really be a penalty!

  7. I’ve always felt that the way to handle it in the playoffs is very easy… you start off the next game with those players in the penalty box. Call it left-over minutes… just as godd as the regular minutes!
Do it and it will stop.
Stevens obviously knew what he was doing because everyone in the Igloo knew it. The refs never called anything because of the time left.

You have to admit that it would be real interesting if the game started with with Alberts and Asham having 1:19 left still to serve… Parent 1:24… Guerin and Coburn 4:53 on fighting majors…. Hartnell not able to get on the ice until 9:46 and whatever they determined Carcillo would get if the penalty would be called. The purists would buy into it but when you have coaches that are total a-holes that’s the way you cure it.
Starting-off the next game on the short end of a 5 on 3 might even make those maggots think twice about what they do!

  8. They should look at the high stick to Cookes face and the slash that Knuble had on Staal earlier that wasn’t called.
