It’s that time of year again for PenguinPoop’s empty net goals and empty net assists calculator to start popping out empty net stats in comparison to scoring leaders and goal scoring leaders.
So I pulled out the calculator and here’s what I came up with:
*Final end of season stats.
% of overall goals that came from empty net goals:
- Henrik Sedin: 10.3%
- Alexander Ovechkin: 10.0%
- Steven Stamkos: 5.9%
- Sidney Crosby: 2.0%
Top 3 Art Ross trophy leaders points derived from empty net goals:
- Henrik Sedin: 3 goals and 1 assists on empty net goals.
- Alexander Ovechkin: 5 goals and 0 assists on empty net goals.
- Sidney Crosby: 1 goals and 2 assists on empty net goals.
While the Art Ross Trophy race is not affected by empty net goals, the MVP vote should be looking at how many of the players points were derived from empty netters. If you take the players total points that they have now and subtract the freebie empty net points, then the race doesn’t look too different this year:
- Henrik Sedin: 112 pts – 4 empty net pts. = 108 pts
- Sidney Crosby: 109 pts – 3 empty net pts. = 106 pts
- Alexander Ovechkin: 109 pts – 5 empty net pts. = 104 pts
How about how the goal scoring race is affected:
Overall goals minus empty net goals:
- Sidney Crosby: 51 goals -1 empty net goal = 50 goals
- Steven Stamkos: 51 goals -3 empty net goals = 48 goals
- Alexander Ovechkin: 50 goals -5 empty net goals = 45 goals
Crosby vs Ovechkin lifetime empty net goals
- Alexander Ovechkin: 15
- Sidney Crosby: 4
We will keep this updated the rest of the regular season.
Laste years race: Empty Net Goals: Malkin, Ovechkin & Crosby
Share this:
Crosby would have more if he didnt miss the net
milan lucic from the bruins has 5 empty netters alreday this season alone crosby has 4 total in his lifetime…poop is right
sedin-112 points
Fixed, Thanks!
The empty net stat is not very revealing. If the Pens were ahead late in the third more often they would have more empty net opportunities–perhaps Crosby would get another couple of EN’s.
In any case, getting a lot of empty net goals helps the team. Teams do score with the extra attacker and getting an empty net goal seals the game for you. This is why coaches put at least 1 or 2 of their best players out when the opposing goalie is pulled.
When discussing who is the better/more valuable player, there are arguments in Crosby’s favor and arguments in Ovechkin’s favor…but counting empty net goals is not significant either way.
Also, those quoting the Caps’ record without OV as a knock against him are wrong. Winning against non-playoff or borderline teams without OV is not an indication of how the Caps would do without him against a strong team. I think the Cap’s record against strong teams without OV this year is 0-2-2.
RPAA I agree, they didn’t take into consideration the record the Caps had against the strong teams when Ovary was out. Plus they should have taken into consideration that the Caps won the Presidents trophy by playing in the worst division in the NHL and they all ran up goals and assists by playing weaker teams and had the easiest “Strength of Schedule” in the entire NHL. Good Point.
Stamkos only has 3 lifetime empty netters, Sedin has 5 career emptynetters but he’s played for like 8 some seasons. Ovechkin lives for empty net goals.
Ovechkin just cares about stacking his stats. He has no empty net assists because he would never even consider passing the puck and letting somone else get a free goal.
let’s not forget shooting percentage. ovechkin took 70 more shots this season than crosby.
I’m so sick of Ovechkin’s empty net goals, why is he on the ice in those situations when they are up two?! Because he is so selfish, and he sits way out of the zone and cherry picks. So if he is out there in big time defensive situations why doesn’t he play D.
With all due respect to Caps fans, your “goals per game” stats are pretty near irrelevant to the criteria for the “most valuable” player award. What makes Ovechkin’s “goals per game” stats higher than Crosby’s is that Ovechkin was suspended a good number of games. Does that make him more “valuable” to his team? No – in fact, the opposite is true. The real relevance of Ovechkin’s suspensions is how good an indication they were of his actual “value” to his team by showing exactly what happens to the Caps when he doesn’t play. Guess what – the Caps won almost every game Ovechkin was suspended. In fact, the Caps won a much higher percentage of their games when Ovechkin didn’t play than they did when he did play. Obviously, the best measure of how valuable a player is to his team is what happens if he’s not there. By that measure, Sedin, Crosby, Miller, and Stamkos are all much more valuable than Ovechkin to their team. Take Miller out of the equation, for example, and Buffalo probably wins a quarter to a third fewer games, easy.
Nicklas Backstrom has a higher point per game when Ovechkin is out as well. He has 14 point in 10 games without and 87 points in 71 games when he is in.
If he played more games I’d peg Rask for the Hart. Better GAA, SV % and Boston has less talent than Buffalo.
Crosby plays with no talent, unlike Sedin and Ovechkin. It is a toss up between Stamkos and Crosby for how has the crappiest set of wingers, though St. Louis is better than anyone on Pittsburgh, I just don’t see TB enough to know where he lines up.
I’d say Miller, Crosby and Stamkos are the finalists for Hart and any would be a worthy recipient. As much as I’d like Sedin to get it for being one of the main reasons I won my hockey pool!
That button on the calculator probably reads: “FIGURE IN SUSPENSIONS FOR CHEAP SHOTS” I want to know if the calculator has a STEROID tester on it.
in your calculator…add in totals games played
ovechkin will have 72 after tomorrow 1.46
crosby will have 81 tomorrow 1.25
and sedin played the full 82 1.3
so with your empty net stats from above that gives
Ovechkin 1.46 Points Per Game
Sedin 1.3 Points Per Game
Crosby 1.25 Points Per Game
And for the Art Ross, that is also an important factor…
Anyone can twist numbers to put an argument in their favor. It was fun sweeping you this year. See you in a later round…if you survive. boo crysby
crosby still passes too much
Ovechkin — 71 games played, 50 goals, 0.7 goals per game
Ovechkin (minus empty netters) 0.63 goals per game
Crosby — 79 games played, 49 goals, 0.62 goals per game
Crosby — (minus empty netters) 0.61 goals per game
But keep trying.
I’m a Caps fan, and maybe one of the few who doesn’t hate Sid–I’d never deny he’s a great player. Still, please, give OV his due.
Boy, you guys are really getting psyched for a playoff run when you are looking at stats on empty net goals. (rolls eyes)
That just makes me think that Crosby needs to step it up for empty net goals. Mario had a ton of them.
Some might say that Crosby doesn’t care but I think it’s Disco DAN who doesn’t care or possibly doesn’t relate to STARS. Boudreau didn’t have a problem putting Ovetjkin on the ice. He gets it and Bylsma doesn’t.
Same as Tocchet did with Stamkos a few games earlier. If this with Therrien we’d be all over his case.
The scores 5 – 3 with 40 seconds to go and Blysma pulls Johnson???? Why? It’s isn’t because we are so proficient on the PP.
When you win the Stanley Cup no one cares too much about the other awards. Crosby is doing just fine by himself. He doesn’t need Blysma’s help as much as Ovechkin needs his coaches help!
The Capital’s franchise works OT promoting Ovechkin like the colleges go about promoting their Heisman Trophy candidates. They need the attention as their fan base was being ripped by Ted Leonsis because they weren’t buying ‘playoff’ tickets just a few years ago.
C’mon. This is a great hockey team. I’d think fans could appreciate that. I don’t get all the hatred towards the Caps. I really don’t. If OV was Canadian would it be different?
If OV were Canadian I would probably be too embarrassed to live here and I’d move to the states. He was a huge embarrassment for hockey and the Olympics the way he acted here last month. I have no problem with players from other countries, I’m a huge fan or our Swedish twins.
I have no “hatred” against Capitals or their fans. I only made comment that Ted Leonsis is working full time sending out literature plus his Rock the RED blog network working OT for Ovechkin. It’s being promoted like he’s in the running for the Heisman.
Are you kidding Ron Malore?-Caps have a great fan base!Caps are more than just Ovi this year, they are a team full of power.I’m a Caps fan in Canada and i love Ovi-he is great for the NHL, but congrats to Crosby on his gold medal and for winning(tying) for the Rocket this year. This year we are more than just Ovi is all im saying. when hes out-we still win. Good luck with the Sens-i saw them embarass you at in Ottawa this year-they are tough.
What don’t you understand my comment being about the owner and his blog network than it does about Ovechkin. FTR, I don’t get embarrassed and the Senators beating the Penguins – shit happens.
Good luck against Montreal. Didn’t you only play .500 against them this year.
Ever wonder why Ovechkin gets so many empty net goals? Because the CAPS win a sh!t load of games and get a lot more opportunities to do so…
Stealth your back! This empty net thing seems to be a yearly battle, hopefully it goes on for years.
I was looking at last years empty net article & comments and you commented a thing about http://www.letsgocapitals.com what happened to them? I remember they made it hard to logon, I think they wanted my first born or something. So what Caps blog do you follow now?
I have always thought that empty netters are the first thing they should consider when there is a overall goal tie.
Actually, I never left… I just don’t post here all that much in the regular season because, well, it’s a Pens board and I’m a CAPS fan… 😉
No clue what happened to “letsgocapitals.com”… The CAPS blogs I read on a regular basis are O.F.B. (On Frozen Blog), JapersRink, and rockthered.net… There are a lot more that I visit a bit less frequently…
I obviously don’t have a problem with empty net goals – And it would be the same if Crosby had ten of them himself… I believe they are a result and reward for a team playing well and having leads at the end of games… I also believe they are often the result of good individual efforts and hustle, because with the goalie pulled, the other team has a manpower advantage…
Although I am a pens fan, I do think empty netters should factor in MVP and overall goal tie breakers. Caps just put OV on during final minute to get him empty net chances. How often do you see OV killing penalties? it’s a rare sight. but when they have a 2 goal lead and opponents are desperate to tie and pull the goalie (essentially a powerplay) OV comes right off the bench. Im not sayin that anything is wrong with it. but it is a fact. 5 empty net goals to 1 make a big difference. In OVs favor, however, i cannot be ignorant to the fact that he probably has some of the best goals ever. (this year) he also played a few games less than crosby. i dont think this should be pointed out too much, as most of the games were his fault – a few were due to injury, but the majority were suspensions for his illegal procedures. Either way, i love OV and the Caps bc of the drama they create with the pens. theres no denying the greatness of the caps this year, or the amazing skill OV has. again, im a pens fan. i hope this teaches a lesson to whiny caps fans that bash crosby or the pens just for team pride. be respectful and face the facts. maybe with some humility and humbleness, your caps will finally beat my pens when it matters: in a playoff series 🙂
Ovi frequently kills penalties…just sayin.
Ovechkin does not frequently kill penalties.
He has spent 4 minutes and 14 seconds this year on the ice in short handed situations. The only other player on the Capitals with less shorthanded minutes is Eric Fehr. Crosby 67+ minutes, Sedin 51+ minutes, Stamko 103+ minutes.
Ovechkins penalty kill time per game he played in this year is 3 seconds a game.
I agree with the annoying fan statement.
Maybe the word frequently has a different meaning than it does here??
And if you really think there isn’t a bloc of ignorant, annoying Pens fans saying the same crap ignorant, annoying Caps fans say, you need a reality check.
Just by chance are you from Punxsutawney Phil?
I disagree… How a player gets his goals is irrelevant… Usually, teams are one goal down trying to tie the game when they pull their goaltender… Why shouldn’t the CAPS put out their best goal scorer in an effort to ice the game? Are you seriously faulting the CAPS and/or Ovechkin for being good at it? Please…
I’m not a Crosby basher (I’d love to have him on the CAPS roster), but the bashing goes both ways… There are idiot fans of both teams…
And I think the CAPS are pretty humble already… I mean, a lack of playoff success has that effect… What they lack is playoff confidence, and for some players, playoff experience… Oh yea, and the CAPS have beaten the Pens in the playoffs once, so it has happened… Will it happen again? Who knows? But I relish the opportunity to get it done, even though it entails the risk of losing to the Pens again… Nothing ventured, nothing gained…
