Penguins Update: A House Divided

In one of his most inspiring and eloquent speeches, President Abraham Lincoln said, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” Of course ol’ Honest Abe was addressing far weightier issues than the makeup of a hockey team.

Still, it came as a bit of a shock yesterday to learn the Penguins had split the roster into two teams…so early in training camp to boot.

With further ado, here are the teams. It should be noted that Zach Aston-Reese is presently in COVID protocol and will no doubt be assigned to Team 1 when he returns.

Talk about separating the wheat from the chaff! Or the haves and, at least at this stage, the have nots. It doesn’t require a ton of in-depth analysis to see that Team 1 is pretty much the group coach Mike Sullivan plans to have on board to open the season.

So much for giving kids like Sam Poulin and Nathan Legare a legit shot. Although not exactly an ingénue, I’ll throw Radim Zohorna in there too, although he’s presently fighting off a non-COVID illness. Sam Lafferty, who took two minor penalties on Monday night while continuing to shoot himself in the foot, seems to have punched a ticket to eastern Pennsylvania as well.

On the flip side, I guess it shouldn’t come as a shock that Sullivan favorite Dominik Simon is decidedly in the mix on Team 1, despite Other Rick’s impassioned and unflinching analysis of the Czech forward.

Maybe it’s part psychological ploy on the part of the black-and-gold skipper to provide motivation and coax maximum effort from the kids. That didn’t exactly happen during Monday’s lackluster loss to Columbus. Defenseman Cam Lee stood out and Legare tried to do his part…perhaps a little too hard rather than letting the game come to him. But other youngsters such as Poulin, Jonathan Gruden, Pierre-Olivier Joseph failed to seize an admittedly narrow window to impress.

Although I hate to suggest this, perhaps Wilkes-Barre/Scranton is the best place for the kids to cut their teeth at the pro level. They’ll get to hone their skills in all types of situations, away from the comparative glare of the spotlight and scrutiny, not to mention a coaching staff that seems reluctant to promote them. Understandable in a way with top centers Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin out to start the season. Without our twin linchpins, our margin for error is anorexic and young players do tend to make mistakes.

But I digress. Sullivan insists the window is open for players to move from one team to another.

“Just because the groups are the way they are today does not mean that’s how the groups are going to be moving forward,” he stressed. “Everybody understands that. That’s a conversation that we’ve had with the group quite honestly since Day 1.”

We’ll see. For better or worse, I’m betting the black-and-gold squad that squares off against two-time defending Cup champ Tampa Bay in the season opener on October 12 will pretty much mirror our present Team 1.

  1. Hey Rick.
Team 1… I agree with you all, they will be the Boys to carry the Torch on opening nite in the NHL. Add Crosby in 2 or 3 weeks and Malkin in 2 or 3 months if we are lucky.Maybe room for one more player but that is basically the team to go after the 2022 Cup. Not going to happen Rick !
This is the roster that officially ends the streak as OTR mentioned. Any of the Pens teams from the last 3 years could beat this team in a 7 game series. That is the point. At sometime you have to realize the “Golden Days ” are over. The window is NOT open anymore. I am so tired of hearing that mentioned every year. As the wise old sage said ” Don’t worry about a Window when you are in a middle of an Earth Quake.” Meaning please take a hard look at the rest of the top 10 teams in the NHL right today, and ask your self “is this team capable of beating them in a 7 Game Cup Final??” Be honest..Many have gotten better and tougher !! We went the wrong way.
I hope I am wrong but to me there will be very few ” New Young Pens ” on the roster come April unless we have a rash of injuries and that usually means injuries to Letang and Malkin. God forbid if Crosby received another concussion and was out for the season. To many leaks in the boat Rick…
    Cheers

  2. Hey Rick,

    Great stuff!

I am with you Mike, when I saw this what little optimism I had hopped on the last train for the coast.
I think this is the day the Penguins Playoff streak dies.

Sullivan learned nothing this past Spring and if that is the case, I hope that this is his Swan Song. I am tired of the team doing the same thing and expecting different results.

Giving just about anyone in WBS a chance would be batter than the farce of Simon. Rodrigues is only slightly better, but NHL TOI for Zahorna, Legare, and Poulin would serve the team far more in the long run than lying to yourself with status quo.

  3. Rick
This is disheartening, to say the least. Hopefully, things are not as they appear. It pains me to think
Simon and Rodrigues are almost shoe-ins to be in the opening night starting lineup. IMO it’s going
to be tough sledding early on without both Malkin and Crosby so why not use the first month of the
season to give Zahorna, Lagare, and Poulin a serious look? You already know what you’ll get from
    Simon & Rodrigues “nothing” LOL.

A little birdie told me that the Pen’s have concerns with POJ holding up physically. I don’t see him starting
    the year in Pittsburgh.
