Penguins Free-Agent Update: Should They Stay or Should They Go?

Back in 1982, the seminal English punk rock band, The Clash, hit the charts with their catchy classic, “Should I Stay or Should I Go?”

I’ve decided to use the song title as my basis for making the call on the Penguins’ current crop of free agents. Kind of a modern-day version of the Roman emperors’ thumbs up or down.

Purely subjective, of course.

First, the UFAs.

Matt Grzelcyk (D) Go

Initially, I would’ve considered re-signing Gryz if the price was right. After all, he led the team in power-play assists and had a great deal to do with improving that unit’s performance. However, puck distribution skills aside, Matt’s micro stats were pretty bad. And we don’t have an effective physical defenseman to pair with him.

Bokondji Imama (F) Stay

I loved his combination of toughness, aggression and energy, something we’ve been sorely lacking. The downside? Boko’s on the mend from surgery to fix a torn bicep and won’t be available until well into the season. Sign another tough guy, you say? All well and good, except Boko meshed well with his teammates, both in the ‘Burgh and in Wilkes.

Joona Koppanen (F) Stay

I could go either way on the hulking Finn. But he did a decent job in a depth role with the Baby Pens, and the kids need vets to look up to.

Matt Nieto (F) Go

An easy peasy call. The 32-year-old winger displayed lots of character by battling back from multiple knee surgeries but was largely ineffective.

Now, the RFAs.

Connor Dewar (F) Stay

Loved his grit and compete level, not to mention his very good work on the PK. I can envision him skating next to Blake Lizotte and Imama on a pesky, abrasive fourth line.

Pierre-Olivier Joseph (D) Go

There’s a school of thought that suggests many of POJ’s struggles were attributable to a poor working relationship with outgoing coach Mike Sullivan. However, he didn’t exactly shine during his half-season with the Blues, either. The elements are there. I just don’t know if they’ll ever come together to form a consistently effective defenseman.

Vasily Ponomarev (F) Stay

As with Koppanen, I’m a bit ambivalent on Ponomarev. The 23-year-old Muscovite put up solid boxcars and acquitted himself well in Wilkes, but was practically invisible during a couple of brief cameos in the ‘Burgh. Perhaps he’ll show better (and be given more of an opportunity) under our new coach.

Conor Timmins (D) Stay

Saw enough that I liked, including size and an inclination to use it to defend his net front, to bring Timmins back. Experienced some struggles following a solid start, but was shoehorned into playing his off (left) side next to Erik Karlsson. An adventure to say the least.

Philip Tomasino (F) Stay

I seem to be squarely in the minority on the ex-Pred, but I liked him, too. In particular, his elusiveness in open space, decent puck skills, and willingness to attack the net and shoot. As for drawbacks, I wish he would’ve meshed better with Evgeni Malkin.

It’s important to note that all of our RFAs with the exception of Ponomarev have arbitration rights. Which may encourage Kyle Dubas to relinquish their rights with the aim of then signing them to more favorable deals.

On Broadway

Former Pens assistant coaches David Quinn and Ty Hennes have joined Sullivan in the Big Apple. So has former Avs and Bruins skipper Joe Sacco.

Talk about a heavyweight coaching staff!

As an aside Sully, Sacco and Quinn all played their college hockey at Boston University under legendary Terriers coach Jack Parker. They share a palpable synergy that should help when guiding a veteran (and somewhat troubled) team like the Rangers.

EK in Play?

With veteran defenseman Nick Jensen slated to be out long-term and the team looking to make a big push forward, Ottawa has a glaring need for a right-shot defenseman.

Might a certain three-time Norris Trophy winner and former Sen fit the bill?

  • Hey all.

Scratch one RFA-to-be. With questions/concerns about his future on the side of the pond, it looks like Ponomarev is heading back to the KHL.

    Rick

    • That is sort of disappointing Rick. This is the first time in a long time that there is a possibility for upward mobility in this organization for prospects. Don't tell Caleb, he thought Ponomarev was the jewel of the Guentzel trade.

  • Hey all,

Just saw that the Stars fired Peter DeBoer after he led them to (but not past) the Western Conference Final for the third-straight season.

Stands in stark contrast to the Pens, who endured four-straight opening round exits followed by three non-playoff seasons under Mike Sullivan.

For the record, DeBoer's been to (and lost) twice in the Stanley Cup Final (including once to Sully), and lost six times in the WCF over the course of an 18-season NHL coaching career.

Talk about a groomsman but never a groom!

    Rick

    • I guess some teams demand excellence and do not put up with failure, while other teams need to wait until it is far too late to make a change. The interesting question is will they play it safe by giving a good old boy a Conference Finals team to dismantle or will they be bold enough to take a chance on a promising young Coach with a solid resume but a limited track record of failure in the NHL.

  • Hey Rick

    Grzelcyk – Agreed, Go

Imama – Depends, the team certainly needs a player like him but if they can upgrade, I would rather get a player in here that can also contribute on the score sheet. I am not really a fan of a one-dimensional pugilist but if Dubas doesn’t add anyone else then I will agree.

Koppanen – Sorry, I disagree. He adds almost nothing to the team but occupies a contract slot.

Nieto – Agreed, get him out of here.

    Dewar – Agree, Stay

POJ – Agreed, why the why was he even brought back here.

Ponomarev – Agreed, not only stay but give him a legitimate opportunity to progress.

Timmins – haven’t decided yet. Not sure how much Sullivan’s system or lack thereof hurt Defensemen.

Tomasino – Agreed only if he is signed around league minimum, otherwise there is a real risk of him being nothing more than an oxygen thief blocking a player that can develop.

Karlsson being traded to Ottawa, hmmm intriguing thought. I wonder if or how much of his contract we would have to eat. Trading Karlsson would just about seal the fate of even the most deluded fan thinking that there still was a chance but if could get another 1st round pick…….

Watching videos of some of these kids, I could be happy with the team using their pick to get Keshawn Aitcheson (like you highlighted the other day) AND Bill Zonnon. Doubtful that either kid will be in the line up this season and maybe not next season but both of these kids will in the NHL and they both will be big contributors to their teams bringing skill and grit, knocking down opponents in all three zones and giving the team opportunities to control both creases.

    • Hey Other Rick,

Like you, I'd be very (VERY) happy to land Aitcheson and Zonnon. Maybe not upper-echelon talent, although I think both have a lot of raw tools, but definitely the kind of aggressive, competitive players we lack and need.

I agree with every free agent you mentioned. The idea of Karlsson returning to Ottawa makes a lot of sense, especially if there’s an opportunity to acquire quality prospects in return. However, I have a hard time seeing Ottawa parting with any of their top young talent unless we’re willing to retain a significant portion of Karlsson’s salary. In that scenario, Dubas would be faced with a tough decision: either facilitate a substantial salary dump or absorb a large portion of EK’s contract to make the deal work. IMO
