The Penguins have placed forwards Ben Kindel and Bryan Rust on IR. In a pair of corresponding moves, they’ve recalled forward Rutger McGroarty and defenseman Chase Pietila from the Baby Pens.

At a press conference this morning, Pens POHO/GM Kyle Dubas explained that Kindel had suffered a vasovagal episode on the team plane on Tuesday. In layman’s terms, a vasovagel episode occurs when heart rate and blood pressure drop suddenly, leading to reduced blood flow to the brain and causing a brief loss of consciousness.

Ben will continue to be tested upon his return to Pittsburgh.

Meanwhile, Rust is slated to be out longer term with a lower-body injury. He’ll be re-evaluated in six weeks.

Yikes. IMHO, Rusty’s still an inspirational player who sets a good example by giving his all each and every shift.

If there’s a silver lining, the dual misfortunes paved the way for the Pens to promote McGroarty. The former 14th overall pick is off to a piping-hot start with the Baby Pens, tallying four goals and nine points in only six games. Dating back to last season, he’s notched 14 goals and 43 points in his last 36 AHL games. It’s time to find out what he’s got at the NHL level.

Wish we’d also summoned peppery Avery Hayes, who likewise has nine points (including five goals) in six games. We could sure a heaping helpin’ of his speed, spirit and grit.

Pietila’s recall is a bit of a mystery. The 22-year-old, right-shot defenseman is a stay-at-home type not necessarily known for his offensive prowess. Which, come to think of it, might be just what the doctor ordered given the porous state of our defense.

Another plus. Chase possesses decent size (6’2” 202) and a physical bent. He’s one of the precious few players in the organization who’s a willing and capable fighter.
