Just a very quick post to call attention to the billboards former Penguins coach Mike Sullivan has placed at various locations around the Pittsburgh area.
The message?
THANK YOU, PITTSBURGH. CUP FAMILY IS FOREVER.
Just an exceptionally classy move. Sully most certainly didn’t owe us anything, especially in the wake of increased criticism, warranted or otherwise, in the years following the back-to-back Stanley Cups.
Such is the way of things in sports and especially for an NHL head coach.
One moment you’re a hero, leading the charge.
A bum the next.
Although I’m dubious about his chances of success with the Rangers (they’re in the same boat as our Pens), Sully remains a knowledgeable, passionate hockey coach and a quality human being. The latter, the highest compliment I can offer.
In particular, I was always impressed with the way he shunned the spotlight in moments of triumph while modestly deferring credit for the team’s (and his) considerable success to his players.
Again, class.
As the billboard suggests, I look forward to the day, well down the road of course and long after Sully and his players have moved on to other pastures and recent disappointments have faded, when they return to the ‘Burgh to be properly honored and fully appreciated for their achievements and contributions.
Until then?
Although it may sound sacrilegious, I wish him nothing but the best in New York.
